Is there any way of creating areas of mist in a map using sprites?

theres an NS map which does mist really well, i think it was just a few layered sprites.

Anyone care to point me in the direction of a tutorial on how to do this? Put sprites in and transparency stuff that is.

there are proberly tutorials, but u should just experiment, u'd learn more.

just put in a few env_sprite entitys and change the values to see what they do, put the render number to 255 and set it to Additive.

I've seen this recently in some maps and either their values are horribly wrong or something else is, but they make this hyper bright white smoke...make sure the sprite you have is not a white smoke but rather more grey so it is a bit more subtle.

Couldn't you use the de_aztec mist(which is the best part of playing CS imo. And pretty much the only good part) and credit the CS team for using it in your map? You could get it from the cache with GCFScape.

you are free to use any CS content in a DoD map. they are both Valve owned properties, and many official DoD maps have textures, models, sprites, sounds that originated in CS over the years. always good to put a credit in the text file if you borrow stuff from CS, just as an acknowledgement but it's not really necc, just a nice thing you should probably do anyway.

What's the best smoke sprite to use for a smoke grenade? And how do I use it directly from the cache instead of just extracting it and putting it in the sprite's folder?

If you're talking about for a particle effect then use the following:
