custom models and hammer editor 3.5 beta

Greetings,

When using custom models, what does one need to do in order to make valve hammer editor 3.5 beta display them?

I figure it probably has something to do with the fgd, but I don't really know. Can someone explain this a little?

Also, I asked a while back about how the server handles custom models being sent to the client when playing.. and someone noted that a .res file is required. However, when playing a recent map that had models I didn't have, the server sent me the models, but there was no .res file put on the server. What's the deal with that?

Thanks in advance,
jcb

Hammer Editor displays models already.

But it doesn't display random models I download from various sites. That's what I'm asking.. will that FGD fix that? (Or if I make my own model, will Hammer just render the model if I use that FGD?) I thought I might have to add things to an FGD for custom models to be displayed.

chuck the custom models in you dod/models/mapmodels folder and they will show up when you look for them

Sly Assassin is right.

Sounds like you haven't put them in your models sub folder. You need to put them in there for them to show in Hammer properly.

... use gcf scape to extract & copy dod ones ... Assuming you have hammer 3.5 and the right dod fgd, and the models in the dod folder (models or mapmodels), they'll show up. Modify the render distance in the Hammer options too (facultative).
