Stationary MGs?

How do,

First off, sorry if this is inthe wrong form but i gernerally stick to the MSA forms but as this is an idea for a map model I though it belonged in here.

Anyway, jus wondering if it would be possible to adding a static machine gun that can be used by any player/class. I was thinking of something along the lines of a Vickers for the British maps. If its possible I think it would be cool if you could introduce something so that you can drop your MG ammo to the Vick to reload it.

Its jus a thought i had, but i was wondering if it was possible?

No, there is no entites to allow ammo falling into a zone to reload a func_tank.

You can make a vickers mdl mg and have it fire. But it would have to be pointing one direction all the time because it cannot movewith the func_tank. You would see a vickers aiming ahead but not to the left where its actually firing.

And you have to use prefabs(which more than likely suck to lower R_speeds). God, why can't we have DoD for HL2 already?

You mean world? I'm talking about making an invis non wpoly func_tank and adding the vickers .mdl on top of it.

Basically like I said the first time, the only way for it to work is have the machine gun stay pointed in one direction if you want to make mappers an actual vickers *.mdl. But if you modeled the gun in hammer, mappers could make it point any direction and fire. But dropping mg ammo to help it is impossible. Hope this is the answer you're looking for, if not - go ahead and ask more questions.

Do the new MGs rotate at their bipods origin or still from the players view ?

Players view, HL1 is not capable of doing it from the origin or it would have been done in dod.

How did they do the .50 cal MGs in HL then? They rotated on their tripods didn't they? And I'm pretty sure that FA has a few maps which have stationary guns that can rotate on their tripods.

Thats because the guns in Half Life were brush based entities (func_tanks) and the machineguns you are thinking about in Dod are player weapons. Two different things.

It is possible to have model based func_tank weapons...

I might make an example map to see how it would look and if it works right i will post it here

You're quite right, you can make mounted guns like that, just not very pretty ones.

Hey, you ever played Half-Life? There are mounted guns a few places:
- a mini gun to take out a bunch of marines near a train
- a cannon to take out two big-ass monsters in what looks like a parking lot
- at least three bunkered mini guns manned by marines

These are all modeled out of "world" blocks (as opposed to being designed as a model with more detail) and look a bit blocky. In any case, such "cannons" have infinite ammo and can swivel about a point you can design. Player weapons must attach to the player entities and, as such, swivel along with the player.

well the models being blockey should be a problem. a vick could be made just by using a rectangle for the body and a cylinder for the cooling jacket. AS long as a high res skin was put on it it would look ok i think. Cheers for the info lads.
