Small Maps Pack
Guys: as most of us have realized in the past week or two, there is a growing problem and debate within our mapping community. We are faced with the releases of maps such as para_iceworld2, and dod_awp_map.
I myself clearly spoke against these releases. It WAS my opinion that they had no place in our community. I still believe, though, that these maps as currently released hurt the community because they often gain instant popularity, but theres very little work put into them. A certain release didn't even compile with lighting (whether or not it was a joke thread).
But I've realized that the arguing and ensuing flaming that these threads bring aren't the way to adress the problem. After some thought, and then consulting with xerent, I've realized we need to accept these maps, just bring up the skill level involved in making them. We want the maps that get played alot to meet a certain standard of the skill, hard work, and quality that was put into them. And so, rather than complaining, I'm here to present mappers with this idea.
Why don't we just regulate this kind of map, by making maps of the same sort and style, small, one area and very vicious, but with a higher quality, in looks and construction. We get real and talented mappers to spend an hour or two, and make one of these maps that actually meets the standards we look for in these forums.
And so, we should release a mappack of these maps. Make one of these maps, put effort into it, and submit it to me.
Rules:
-Relatively contained, 1 area and maybe afew small routes.
-Good graphical qualities
-Designed with lan gameplay in mind as these are most popular on lan games
-Good gameplay of this style
Submissions:
-Cutoff date is Midnight, Eastern Time, July 5th
-E-mail file or url to nrwirth@attbi.com along with a description and your nickname on the boards
-In addition, post the name, description, at least one picture of your submission in this thread.
As a warning, a mapper probably won't get more than 2 maps into the pack in order to be fair. 12 maps will be accepted.
Xerent will be our primary host, but we will accept others, if you're interested e-mail me.
And for those who would seek to merely flame again for either side, I ask you, what have you done to solve the problem other than complaining? This is not the thread for it.

I'd like to take this oppertunity to present my apologies to Lister and Whiskas for handling this issue poorly.
This is a way for the two of you to make your maps more visually attractive and included in a map pack. I'd hate to see this mappack be released without iceworld etc.
I'm collaborating with Jackhammer to make a more beautiful version of dod_kar_map that will include some sniper towers too. I also have a kar_map with dust textures done and ready, which I will retexture and rework so it looks decent enough sooner or later.
I'd also like to say that if you have nothing positive to post, don't post it. I know I did post some negative posts, and it was wrong of me.

(btw I know im not a good mapper yet with 0 releases to date :P but if you're short on ppl to try and improve the map I'd like to give it a try and see if I can make it better)
Also, some of you may or may not remember the "United Project". Well, I have a rmf of a plaza from the project, perfect size for this kind of map. As I'm judging the submissions, it wouldn't be fair for me to polish it off and submit it, but I will send the file to anyone interested. Its of a good quality and I think would be very fun in this style.

No, I just want to have good mappers of the community to make some of these maps. By doing so, we figuratively up the bar so that maps of this style that look like crap will no longer be played.
Also, I'd like to specify this a bit more:
When I say maps of this style, it doesn't have to be 4 blocks like iceworld. We're just looking for maps of a small size and constant action. They can have objectives, be para, whatever. For example, take The Last Patrol Episode from BoB. Condense it a little, but there's a river, its at night, one team has to get across the river and infiltrate a house, theres some houses and open space on either side, one big area mainly. Thats a good lan map, it would have a lot of action. It doesn't however have to be a big open space with crates and a lot of guns lying all over the ground.

I like the idea. I to am a new mapper. Never released anything yet cause im still learning and dont want to release tiny maps. I want to get the hang of this and release a larger scaled map and hope to god its big, beautiful and sexy enough to play like caen, ect...
I know it takes allot of work. Im learning that fast. I just want to make sure i have some good work out there and can become one of you well known mappers..

LATER: Now I remember, I played this on KK a few days ago. I liked being a MG on that map. I also liked Hill (my all-time fav. map). I usually was a sniper or using that cannon blowing up Allies at will. Tis a shame NC17 didn't put that cannon in hill_classic and replaced it with a motar.

Nomad, just make it docs or something, that'd be good.
And june 5th, that should give you enough time, it doesn't have to be that complicated.

mine is quite open, but small in a way. im am about 20% done, i send some screenies in a week

I'm planning on adding in a map but I dont know how close to done I am because I dont know where I'm stopping. I started with a bridge and I now have quite a nifty little courtyard with a cafe on side and i still dont have a point for the map :/

mine is essentially done, the funny thing with it being deathmatch is the first wave you have time to aim at the other guy and shoot him, but after that, it's difficult to know where someone will spawn. I also have to fix a few bugs that look like charlie does (that section of beach that goes invisible)
I have a small king of the hill map ready for the mappack :D

well, I fixed the funky brush errors, the r_speeds are roughly 550, I ran a server full of bots and it worked out way way way better than I had expected...and if you use fog, it makes it even more fun. I have a small sample picture of the map. (I'll release a beta in the next day or two so I can smooth out any bugs in time for the mappack.

Well I've thought of a point if you can call ti that. Kill everything.
its a little german town and the germans are suprised by an allied invasion and need to clear out the area. There will be bodies and stuff all over the palces the terrain will be highly destructable with cool spawns for both teams.

After reading your first post, my maps WAY too big. Sorry to get your hopes up! My fault for being stupid.
Best of luck with getting some quality maps!
Edit: Looks like Gorbacev's work should be good. Nice plane... But the tail seems to be sticking up slightly too much. Also, on some of the rocky "outcrops" the contrast between snow and rock is too great. Make a texture which has snow around the edges, and rock in the middle.

Whadda ya mean the tail sticks up to much! i put a lot of work into getting that model right. then I tweaked the hell out of it so it looked right in game. Its staying that way :)
If your meaning it dosnt look crashed, well no thats not the crashed model. the crashed model is still 1/2 done my HD

Sorry- I mean the model itself is fine. The angle at which the plane is stuck in the snow is slightly wrong. If you look, the tail seems to be sticking out of the snow slightly too high, but that could be fixed in hammer (especially easily if you have the latest hammer with model support) by rotating the angle of the model.

er..you can't really see it at the picture angel...but it's purposefully that high...it looks just fine in game. As for the texture thing..I know what you mean..but it would be very very difficult to get it right so that the entire map looks smooth enough, because the angle that every cliff is at is different. I'll see what I can do, but I highly doubt it.

Map pack will be coming out next Sunday, all maps have to be submitted by this Saturday, and then accepted maps are given 1 week to fix any bugs or make any last minute changes.
Yeah, I saw your map, I replied to your e-mail. In any case it's pretty good, it'll most likely get in the pack.

can it b made into a single exe plz, so just one click instal the lot.
Its cos one place i wana install it is at a lan place where me and my m8s get a couple of free hours a week. These hours will b our only chance to instal, and im not sure people will b over pleased if i hav to stand at their cpu for half and hour putting all the models and sprites etc for every map into the right folders.
Oh definately, it'll most likely be a self extracting exe, even if it was a zip file, it'd be set up so you'd only have to extract into a folder and everything would go to the right sub directory.

Nomad: I will make the final exe, just submit it as is.
After Saturday, mappers will have a week to make any fixes or changes, and will turn in the final version next Saturday.

No no, if there's something like that holding you up, but you'll have it done by next Saturday, just submit it as is and explain why it's not complete. Then finish it for next Saturday.

I've been away for a whole week because of work and I'd like to know if it's too late to submit my map dod_zigliara. It wasn't finished last week-end so I couldn't submit it...
No man, you can submit it, even if its not totally done. Just make sure it's done by next weekend.
I'm working on the destroyed version of the C-47 don't worry. I'll try my hardest to get it done bfr next saturday but I can't promise anything as my room is only 3/4 decorated I may have to work on that instead of my comp.

ok, I emailed a prelim version. It's about 1Mb, and when I get the other model it'll be a tiny bit bigger, but now's the time to see if it works on other people's computers with all the files I've supplied.
