dod_rhine screenshots!
Here are some screenshots of my map dod_rhine_b1, the map is in a town on the rhine where the allied airborne must take the bridges and town to get their armor across. Ive tested the map along with my brother and a few friends and have most if not all mistakes/bugs gone. It is completly ready for release! Take a look at the screenshots and tell me what you think! :D
Thanks a Lot,
Thomas "-irish-" Tobin
P.S. I was wondering if the dod team are accepting maps for 1.1, and if so then would you take take a look at my map. I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at it, this is the first map ive tryed to put out to the public . If you would like to take a look i will send you a link to download the exe file that includes the bsp, overview map, the cfg file, and text file.

That looks VERY nice!!! GJ
It does look good enough to be an official map.. the maps looks very big..how are the r_speeds??
PS next time make the pics a bit smaller.. it took me AGES to download..(56k)
The r_speeds are mostly around 400-500 and only go between 700-800 in one or two small area's; nothing above that.
Oh yeh and sorry about the big pics.
Anyone know a good place to host the map?, please let me know!

Great work, great effort. ;)
the map looks really nice and looks like it make a great map to play on. but i have one little request, the road texture, it seems a little oversized to my eyes. i have never been to the rhine so i may be wrong, but to me, some of those textures are oversized greatly
Dodmaps.com will host it for you man. Just pm me if you're interested.
Our channel is #dodmaps on gamesnet as well.
The road textures is oversized(2x normal size) i reduced r_speeds a nice bit and the bigger texture size you won't even notice while playing

Looks great man, can't wait to explore. TheNomad, geocities would die fast. =\
Nice w0rk, but the rhine isnt that small.
If you are looking for a host, look no further. I would be happy to host this great map at the DoD Editing Center (http://dodec.dodstudios.net). You can contact me via e-mail at host@dodec.dodstudios.net. Hope to hear from you soon.

I like the layout of the map, I hope it plays as good as it looks.
I would reconsider the textures and lightning though, it looks to much yellowish to me... and if the most areas have 500 in r_speed you can afford to scale down some textures to normal size...
But thats up to you budy. Good going so far...
Looks like you've put a great effort into it but I'd change the water texture and the lighting is too yellow/orange to me. Anyway it's GJ. Release it now!!!
It looks good but a tad blocky in places where r_speeds are lower then they need to be so you could add some more detail
I also dont agree with some of the texturing but other then that its looking good

looks good.
nice work on lighting and your brushwork is looking pretty solid too. if there is one thing that really bugs the hell out of me it has to be the water texture, that you used for the river! go check out donner.wad - there's a nice kami one in there (256x256 even,i think)
The alcoves in the bridge would look much prettier if they were triangular or semicircular when viewed from above, instead of square.
man, the pic with the tank, how did you get that to light correctly? I've got a similar thing but it comes out all black every time. I guess its basically a question about lighting models in general if anyone knows about that.
Looks really good though, can't see anything I'd change...

I don't like the water texture, at all, personally. Otherwise, it's great!
Thank you guys for your constructive criticism(i like it)
(I hit the enter key before i was done with that last post:p) well anyway as for the bridge being too "square" i can fix it pretty easily, it used to be semicircular(lucky for me i make prefabs out of anything i think i might need later:) I'll make the road texture smaller and see how it does on r_speeds. And the reason i'am using the default hl water textue was because it was the only one that i could do flowing water with(not sure why) if anyone knows offhand if the donner.wad water texture can be used as flowing water let me know and i be happy to change it:)
This is the sort of architecture your bridge would look better with:
http://www.users.on.net/sdyson/dod/bridge30000.jpg
Apologies for the crap texturing job.
The old bridge i'am going to put back in looks alot like that, just not as rounded. Nice bridge by the way
I built it using 24-sided cylinders as templates. I've also built a smaller one using 12-sided cylsinders, and it looks quite acceptable. I'm obsessed with fancy curves, and I keep forgetting things like the bridge in dod_anzio is made of maybe 7 brushes (excluding handrails) and looks fine in-game. Maybe my fancy curves are just a tad overdone :)
Maybe just a little bit, still looks nicer than the "square" bridge.....:)

I think...
i) water change is absolutely necessary
ii) the doors in the 3 picture need to either be flush with the wall or sunken in a little, not sticking out.

RHINE - RIVER CROSSING
By: Iconoclast (asmith@pollux.csustan.edu)
Layout Assistance: STUKA, Unknown Soldier
Rhine River, Germany
The Allies have pushed their way deep into Nazi territory and one of the few
last struggles they have to over come is crossing the river Rhine.
The German army however have blown the other bridges forcing the allies to
try and capture one of the last remaining bridges.
The attack by the Allies on the bridge has just begun. Gain control of the
bridge and all the flags, to allow the advance of armored and troop units
into the fatherland.
Thanks to: 218th clan and all the supporting players.
I will try to get a list of mapnames up by the weekend. Probably at DoDnetwork (http://www.dodnetwork.com/) since it is back up again.
p.s. As far as I can see dod_rhinecrossing or dod_rhinebridge don't exist.
p.p.s. I forgot to comment on your map :D It looks smashing. I especially like the texture colors you have used. Reminds me of one of my favourite custom maps from dod 3.1.
Good work keep it up

Map layout and brushwork looks quite nice. I would advice only changes to textures. Now street and buildings' skins looks very similar, maybe due to ambient light color. You could change some of them or reconsider light_env colors. GJ.
hhhhmmm.........has it been released yet? i presume its done because you said its V3(i haven't seen it yet and i play alot of custom maps.............

Could we see a new pic of the bridge area? It doesn't have to be as detailed as got lag?'s but still prettier than before ;).

omg trail duck, please consider that the old dod_rhine was made like two years ago when dod was beta 1.1.... it wont be played anywhere anymore. Just use dod_rhine, I think everyone is perfectly fine with that.

Its an old map, and of no importance any longer. Still the name dod_rhine has been used. Thats all I wanted to point out.
I just uploaded an old HoustonDoD installer on my private webspace. I'll leave it there for sometime for you or anybody else to download.
The original site which I got it from, doesn't exist any longer.
The download is HERE (http://www.xs4all.nl/~thoorens/Maps/dod_rhine_v3.exe)
As i said, the rhine isnīt that small. THAT is a rhine:

Good work! Reminds me of band of brothers scenes.
Just make the Rhine look like what it is: The dirtiest, smelliest river in Europe. I.e. green water!
Rotkopf
06-17-2003, 03:17 PM
Thatīs not true. Water quality in the Rhine has improved a lot since the last 15 years because industrial facilities have to clean their water before leading it into the Rhine, or they have to get rid of it in some other kind of way. Also, the drink water for the population living around the Rhine consists to 60 per cent of Rhine water. Itīs filtered and cleaned, of course.
The Rhine WAS dirty and heavily polluted, but itīs regaining its former vitality. Several fish kinds have been already sighted again, and itīs not unhealthy anymore to swim through this river (although still not recommended).
Please check your facts before refering to anotherīs country enviromental system. German politics cares about the enviroment since almost two decades now, with very positive results. Other nations are not as succesful with keeping their own enviroment clean. So please draw no fast conclusions before you havenīt informed yourself properly. No flame intended, but since Iīm living near the Rhine, I felt that it was necessary to clear some things up.
And back in the 40īs, I doubt that the Rhine was polluted back then. The grandparents of some friends of mine always told us stories about how they went to the Rhine and swam around there when they were young years ago when we still were small childs. So no big dirty river with sticky green water, sorry ;)
I think the dirty, smelly Rhine period began in the "**** the environment" fifties.
Though I have started wondering how much pollution the war caused. Bombing of waste disposal facilities, temporary cessation of pollution regulations, etc.
First of all, i need new water that flows, and i dont want it all dirty lookin cuz i dont care how the water looks in real life(so stop arguing about it, i mean if you think about it the nice lookin' water makes the map look better!). And having a huge ass river to cross is stupid because its a big suicide....one kar-98 and ummm me...could stop the whole other team. Well anymore suggestions, please say. Im thinking of changing the lighting, im changing the bridge and the water(but i need a flowing water texture).

Sorry Rotkopf- everyone I've spoken to over here says the Rhine is dirty. I didn't do ne research. My bad!
For rivers ALWAYS use the scroll_texturename... not !waterwhatever.
Any DL sumwhere?..:-) meh wants to check this map...
a long bridge would be very fun... just add cover and there would be plenty of advances...
