[MREL] - un-Skinned Garand

Here it is, a new garand, ready for your textures. It's the same garand that I released before, but now, it's compiled into a mdl. You can use it in-game as-is, but the texture is the uv map.

Some of these textures seem to be of a strange resolution, such as the uv maps and the sleeves, and the 8 round box clip. I suspect someone forgot to add the $cliptotextures line to their qc file, that would account for the texture croppage. For the sake of all the skinners who want to skin this, give them the model with its fullsize bmps/UVmaps, recompile this.

Well im skinning this by simply pasting the texture over the mesh and editing in photoshop...i dont know any other way:D

I can't believe I forgot something so simple. There's going to be about a dozen versions of this thing before I get it right. I've fixed it, but I'll have to wait until my bandwith resets to upload the fixed version. I'll edit the first pose when I do.

Ok, it's fixed, everyone who downloaded before, do it again for the fixed garand, I fixed the texture sizes as well as a uv mapping error that I just caught. I don't want a bunch of different versions out there, because it will get confusing, so be sure and use this one.

*edit - Toejam, it does have a bayonet, so download and have fun. Although, I must admit it looks odd for him to swing the stock around to hit someone when he's got that perfectly good bayonet there, maybe someone will re-animate this one.

Y'know, i dont want to rain on your parade, um, again, but for anyone who knows how to decompile a model, or Trigger if he wants to update his zip, these meshes can be muhc larger than the 512 side. The way this works is that the max amount of pixels allowed in a models' bmp is 1024. Hence, every 512 x 512 texture cant get bigger. But when its 512 x 308, it could get bigger, as 512 + 308 < 1024. And the bigger the bmp, the higher quality a skin you can get.

Well if I ever finish this, it'll be my first complete skin, I think I'll finish, It's looking good.

Yeah I'm going to be making my own metal. As of right now the entire model is skinned, not detailed yet. I have a NYC size garbage truckload of work to do, scratches/darken/brighten,sharpen,text,edit out the mesh lines etc etc.

For my metal I just did a cloud effect in photoshop. make a square marqee shape. Get a dark gray, a light gray for ur colors, go to filter/render/clouds and then go to filter/artistic/sponge. put them all to "1" then do a light gaussian blur.

It gives you a very basic metal texture as u can see in my screenshot but I'm going to be tinkering and editing it a lot.

ah k kool, might try that, all though the method i usually use for metal is burn it, dodge it then sponge it but yeh...How do you skin your models?...do u just paint over it in photoshop and import with hlmv or do you do it with milkshape or sumthing like that?:D

Ah k the links all of a sudden mysteriously started working, neway that looks like that will be nice when its all done...i just had a bit of play with making a metal for mine but just looks like a dull sydney suburban train with graphiti...excuse the lame joke.

You can use it if your really desperate lol. My base texture metal is just a very pale weak color I'm using to fill in the blanks and then I'll fine tune it later.

I noticed in-game, after I put in the "US Rifle" text on the reciever (?) it looked fine in HLMV but in-game it's kinda blurry. It's not terrible as you can still read it but I'm just kinda wondering why that happened....

I was just tinkering around w/ my skin and I was about to put in the rear IS adjustment wheels (don't know the name:p ) But I couldn't find them on the mesh. So i just start placing red bars on the skin till I find out where the texture should go. Well, as it turns out, the texture used for the breech (I think that's right) is one continuous texture. The problem is that if you try and squeeze in the texture for the knobs, you will see it quite openly, on the back of the gun, I got a screen shot to show u all what I mean.

Maybe I'm not seeing it properly, but I placed my skin over the new mesh u made (layers in photoshop) and they look identical. Are you sure you updated w/ the right file or am I not looking close enough.....:confused:


EDIT

I looked at the wireframe of the new model you released. I think you messed it up. The back metal part. (where it's stamped US RIFLE etc etc) is all crunched up onto the "mesa" of the metal.

You understand that at all?

R3aveR- I'll be releasing mine very soon, I'm about, oh say, 80% done. Need to complete the rear sight adjusters and finish skin touch-ups. If I can't solve the studiomdl texture miss-alignment I'll release it w/ the small glitch. It's not even notacible in-game, un less your gamma is at radiation level. :p

If memory serves me right, to make the stab animations look best, I would have to reassign the bones in milkshape right? I don't know if you can just copy the kar's stab smds....I'll look into it tho, I would love some stab-o-matic action.

I've got my "preview edition" (not final metal) done. I'm just trying to find a way to set up the rear sight to use a diff. texture so all the metal doesnt get low quality when I puttransparency on.
