Hint brush

Can a hint brush be placed on top of a wall that runs across your hole map - I need to cut the map in half but on that wall that the hint brush sits can it have openings for the player to run through?
will that help with r_speeds? or will that just make a mess?
what i have now is a wall with the sky box on top of it going to the top of the map...
Cheers

The hint brush is so damn confusing. I've read countless tutorials and spent countless hours reading them, but i still dont understand....well, i understand how to use them in just a Hallway with an elbow, but anything more than that is beyond me

the JelloŽ explaination:

imagine your map brushes are LEGOŽ blocks. inside the rooms is empty space. now you need leafnodes in there to calculate VIS.
imagine the Leafnodes as clear JelloŽ gelatin of triangular wedge shapes. fill up your rooms with it.

now VIS is going to check each and every part of each and every leafnode/gelatin triangle to see what other leafnodes/gelatin it can see. if it can see another, then that space it is in and all wpolys(LEGOŽs) touching it will be RENDERED by the video card.

now the HINT brush is a glass knife that cuts the gelatin into other sized triangles during compile, that is all. you can still SEE thru it and move thru it. it is NOT a wall - it is a glass knife.

so how is it used? think of a wedge of gelatin/leafnode that sticks up to "peek over" a wall. you put your glass knife HINT flat like a ceiling over the wall, and the gelatin is cut into 2 parts. the lower part with the plastic soldier/player in it can no longer "peek over" the wall, so VIS is blocked and r_speeds are lower there. and who cares about the part in the air? no one.

of course this analogy works badly in summer, when the heat melts the JelloŽ..... :)

i hope that helps.

I understand what they are and how they work. Its just the positioning of them in more complicated areas than just a hallway

It worked r_speeds way down thanks guys....
man you could put hint brushes in some cool spots to really bring down r_speeds...
