Preview: DayOfDays

As the big fan of Stephen Spielbergs series Band of Brothers I am, I knew from the start I had to make a map based on his works. When I viewed episode 2, called "Day of Days" I knew that, this is it.

Since Im so ****** tirred of all the outbombed urban maps I new I had to do something outdoors. Most maps I seen before are the most very blocky and square, I wanted to do something more realistic. The general layout of the map is complete, but alot of the mechanics behind the maps is still leftout, so its far from complete.

Now some of the places still hold a few more brushes, so Im going to add some more cover but I dont want to push the r_speeds over 800, the highest is spot is like 750 so far.

This map has been done before (para_utah) But it looks nice.

nice overview, and nice map.. good r_speeds for those open areas, but 20 fps.. what graphics card u got??

I like it' looks like interesting gameplay, be sure to limit or remove the snipers for each team, because they can dominate any open maps.

Also, isn't that a british glider? I made an american glider back in the 3.1 days, but it wasn't crashed, maybe someone would like to take a shot at making it look more beat up.

Looks awesome, make the 88's hard to capture so the allies have to use team work to break a good defence of the 88's. Keep us posted.

I would but I'm working on a C-47. I've got the intact version done except for the winter skin and the clip brushes both about 40% done. After that I'm working on a destoryed version.

P2-350, 256Mb ram and a Geforce1 ... rock steady :)

Well, the map is a sniperfest at the moment, I hopefully will change some of it. I dont remember how to limit the classes in 1.0 but someone here will hopefully help me. ( I thought it was a server cfg thingy? )

It is indeed a brittish glider, its the only one I could find. I dont think it matters that much since it crashed and ppl missdroped all over the place... wasnt brittish paras used also?

I been thinking about impact craters also, since the axis are going to have mortars. Note. I been thinking about adding some kind of look out / spoter system with small lamps by the mortars and buttons to trigger them in trenches...

If you look at the first pic you might get a minor understanding of the layout. The objects are: Axis artillery are spiting death on the invaders at utah beach and the 101s who, have rendezvoius (sp?)point at the farm, are send in to silence them, in order to winn. Germans wehrmacht has just been informed of the para threath and must defend the artillery position and capture the allied headquater.

Well, its simply a func_wall with tree texture on it. On some places its actually 2 in front of each other in order to look better...

In the 'Axis artillery, the allied goal' picture, there is that sandbag arrangement in the middle like a square that looks a bit too 'neat' to be in with the rest of the map.......

Otherwise, good looking map.

Well, things move on and Im closing in on an open beta release, there are just a few things that needs to be improved, like better sounds and animations...

that is a REALLY nice map you have there. better than what i made anyway. but its got a nice touch to it currently, keep upthe work and cant wait to play it :)

the only thing i can say is try to get the Glider re-skinned. (yes, I know it would be a Horsa with a US skin) but it would look more realistic.

nah, i think the lighting is great, it gives it the "its getting dark" feeling. :)

I hear this way too often. processor speeds, ram amounts, good sound cards, has nothing to do with this? wtf gfx card aint everything.thats starting to annoy me.

edit- well the gfx card is alot of it but still. there are other things to take into mind.

Looks good.

My only comment is that the trench texture is rather too colourful, and is repeated a lot (ie I'm guessing its a small texture you're using for it).

Looking great mate. My only suggestion is that with the map it comes packaged with some sturmbot waypoints? I do so like that, so i dont have to do it myself. I am so very lazy :)

As far as I know, not many people know how to do waypoints... so probably one of the map's beta testers should do it for them.

I dont use bots myself, so Im not going to spend time installing and learning to make waypoints, I prefer spending that time mapping/playing. :D

But if anyone makes them I gladly add them to the release package. :p

Just thought I should inform you that Im finally making progress with the map. Its summer and my mapping time is limited even though the weather isnt the greatest here in Sweden. :(

I ran into some strange lightning problems, the map was lit from bellow so I got no shadows and everything was overbright, but its solved now.

it apears that the rocks in the last pic are floating ;)

and the treeline texture doesnt really turn me on
is rather old overused and plain

im sure there are alot of better ones around :)

starting to look real good though

Im going to check that stone again, its actually a cover up for a invisible wall I was unable to get rid of in any other way ..

About the texture, yeah it might be a bit overused, but thats because we all like it so much ?! :p

You know, I wish I had a whole team of texture artist working for me in this project ... and a sound engineer, but who knows what the future holds .... :D
