Yeah its me again, and yeah its about them fps again :)

I just started on this map, and I just made one small field, with 3 small buildings on it and in the buildings a few simple beds. But even with only this little bit my fps plummets to 20 when i'm not standing against the edge of the map with my nose.....

I know it has something to do with VIS-block and hint-brushes, but I read the tutorial on those hint brushes and I didnt even understand half of it :)

So here's some pics so you can see what I'm talking about, and an improvised overview.
What I would like to know is where to put those hint brushes and if you dont mind a step-by-step on how to put them there.

p.s. dont mind the textures i havent gotten to that yet :)

I know its a lot to ask for but if ya help me I'll tell everybody your the sh*t

did you compile with VIS and RAD?

Where do I start?

R_speeds. You can check your r_speeds by typing

developer 1
r_speeds 1

in the console. If you get any w_poly higher than 1000 in corners, it's bad.

Then try to compile the map with all the compile programs, CSG, BSP, VIS and RAD.
The map will not be properly compiled otherwise, and will display low framerate, fullbright and excessive eye-candy (not).

No matter what Hulk Bogan says.

Indubidubly, my dear kleinluka, from the halflife wad. You should know better, or has your ignorance grown larger than your memory? ;)

I'm betting if you put a func_wall on the outer walls of all those bunk building thingys, it ouwld reduce R-speeds by a lot.

Lots of replys :) i like (half of 'em bs but thats good :) )

Did i compile with VIS and RAD? ... eehm... i got that ZHL compiler thingey, and I just press f9 in hammer and then it compiles :) so I dont know really :)

I'm gonna make the outer walls func_walls
But should i make like hint-brush stuff anywere?

start simple. hint brushes are like for Imtermidate-High level not beginner. basically block other objects form beign seen with other objects. entitys dont block. complicated brushes which dont hide much shjould be entitys. walls of buildigns that hide the contents should be brushes.

My advice is: pay attention to the compile process, to know exactly what the 4 programs do. It they encounter a problem, they will tell it.
You probably have a leak here. Any entity outside the map or in contact with the outside will be considered as a leak.
Take a look at your compile log.

what do the hint brushes do?? and do u use the hint texture to make hint brushes? (seems obvios but im dumb)

hint brushes split the world along the plane they are placed.

to place a hint brush you simply create a cube cover it in "null" pick a face to split the world along and apply "hint" to it.

now you may ask why we would want to split the world. sometimes HL dosnt judge what can be veiwed properly so to help it hide stuff it cant see you give it hints, in the sahpe of hint brushes. basically they will make your map worse unless you sue them properly in whcih case they will make it better. the line is VERY thin as to whcih it does.

You will get the worst frame rate always if you don't compile with VIS at least.

Since you run the compile tools with the default settings, VIS and RAD are off.

You need to turn VIS and RAD on (normal), see my illustration.
