Is there a way to decompile a map to fix or just do some moderate changes of you own?

decompiling is bad.
tutorials is good.
decompiled brushwork is bad.
learning for yourself is good.

do i need to go on? read tuts and ask us don't decompile its a very sticky issue and dosnt help you learn much at all.

if you decompile with the intention to change youve got a dman long struggle ahead of you. mostly legal, belive it or not epopeol WILL sue.

Winbspc can do that. It simply converts a .bsp file to a .map file.
But the result is not very pretty. This tool is only useful to learn how some entities work.
It is forbidden to decompile a bsp to use the work of another mapper.

Yeah, thats a good rule. you can use it to learn. Though it would be better using tutorials and doing it by yourself, by a lot. To use someone elses map and decompile it is like the 11th commandment. You will be shuned by the community.

I dont belive he had the intentions of "stealing" someone elses work/map, just the fact that yes i know you need to read the tuts......but lets be honest, what harm is it to look at anothers map (to "see" what a finished map would look like?

WOW... Yeah im not trying to steal anyones work.. Even though many people have done someone elses map over... I dont plan to..

I already read tuts.. Im just looking at other options on just how to look at how someone does it. Legal issues... Well I wont get into that.

Like I said im just trying to look at it in that perspective. ALso say I make a map and lose the actual stuff after compile. I want to be able to get back into that map and make changes when and if I have to.

Agreed

The bsp can't really be decompiled, since the decompiled brushwork is bad. The only solution is to regulary make backups of the .map file, and store it on a server or on a CD.

decompiling sucks.
It deleats like 400 soilds. Try the bspview. You can see the bsp but can't convert it, I think thats a useful tool for looking at vis problems and see how the map is broken up.

If I remember right, FraGmaN released the source files to dod_vierville a couple weeks ago. Use the forum search and maybe you'll find it.
