Bloody Ear

Just for a laugh i knocked up a rough model of a blood ear, it looks a bit pants, because i have not spent anytime trying to tart it up, and look more realistic ,10 mins work. But this pic shows it ingame and it could be done much better.

Blood ear pic (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/scitzo/bloodear.jpg)

The idea is for models that have been compiled so the helmets don't fly off when shot at, but a helmet.mdl still kicks in to look like it flys off. So instead of that happening, you would see an ear fly off instead.

Is it worth working on to make it better..?

Do you think it's ear to stay or should i send it on it's way.

Maybe make a custom sound aswell to replace the helmet hit sound

"Ear flank left" or something like that...or maybe just a high pitched screeeeeeeeeeeeeem.

Jk :)

I have a better idea. I dont use modles with helmets that fly off. I think its silly.

But I also thinks it msilly, albeit creative, for flying ears, what if you made a gore model. Something like a flat square model. of a blood splat, with transparent edges, so its like a splatter, and maybe some pices of head, bone, or flesh, stuck in the middle. SO when I get a head shot, stuff squirts out, y'dig?

Yeh thats what i've done in the pic, just used a flat square with transparent edges and stuck an ear model on top of it.

I am thinking ill add a bit more flesh with it, i've even tryed animating the square with the blood splat on so it starts from nothing and spreads out, but it vanished ingame when i tryed that, ill still play around with it yet though.

When i first had the idea i thought i would have a 3rd of the face fly off, but then thought that would look silly as the player model would still have the full face. So then i thought if i just make it an ear and maybe a bit of flesh i could get away with that.

Now i'm just thinking, if it's the head shot anims that always make the helmet fly off. Then is it not possible to add a bone to the headshot anim's and hide a bullet hit head inside the player model assigned to the new bone. Then some how edit the headshot anims, so it swaped the heads in 1 frame count to the gore head instead. Or is this not possible.

I remember sometime ago on the old forums someone realesed a qc file that removed the head and put it inside the player model, when a headshot happened, could you please refresh my brain on how that worked devin, if you know or anyone else, i seem to of forgotten.

Well, add brains and crap, an ear doesnt amke sense to me. ANd the animation (by cheeto) made his head turn to the right, and go into his chest in an instant one the animation started.

I've managed to make the head swap to a bullet hit head when the head shot anim kicks in, although i've only done the work for one of the axis classes at the min, but it's working in HLMV i've not tested ingame yet. Made a mistake though that needs to be sorted, but i'm sure it's going to work.

The only real probs i can see is can i hide the bullet hit head in each classes body for every animation, that might be a prob.

Ill sort the mistake out later today and post a pic or two.

So for thoughs that like a bit of gore, if all goes well headshots that look like the head has just been hit with a bulllet are comming your way soon. And for those that like to use custom model where the helmets don't fly off, you should get the option to a bit more gore, like part of the back of the head bieng blown off where the bullet exited. well l'm hoping i can pull it off anyway.

Excellent job!! And it was Cheeto who did those headshot animations way back when. I remember cause I helped him to joust his memory too. :D He did indeed hide the head inside the player's body for the headshot animation, but he made it so that each positioning was different for each model. I hope this pulls through, what exactly would you be releasing if/when your done? An animation file? Or do we need a new model with the gory head inside. I eagerly await this oh mighty one...

Well what i'm thinking at the min, is just doing it to the one class, and getting it working. Then i will probably release that as a beta, for peeps that are intrested, so then can test it out and give me feed back and let me know if theres any glitches etc. It's not a quick job, it takes alot of setting up and will take time to do it to every class. But if all goes well and i get that far, then after that i could probably release a bunch of smd files that peeps could add there custom heads to and compile thier models. I guess it's a bit early to know for sure how it's all going to pan out, but i shall be redoing my work later today, and all being well should maybe have some screens and a test model for D/L later today.

Sounds awesome. Crossin my fingers that this all works out, it's a great concept that will add further to the atmosphere of the game...

I got a little set back tonight, had freinds call in, so i've gotten a little behind with the project.

I just spent the last two hours setting the model up, with the extra bones and bullet shot head, although i should be able to do this much quicker next time, now i have the figures for the extra bones to work from. I'm now going to redo the head shot anim, or rather make the bullet head follow that of the oridinal head anims, keyframe by keyframe. This also takes a while, but i hope to get it done before i go to bed, so if i do ill probably post it up on the forums for testing.

But it's looking good upto now, so all being well this is definitely looking like it's going to work....:)

What happens when the helmet gets knocked off and they don't die?

Well the default models should stay the same i think, and only when you get the killer headshot will the head change. As for custom models where the helmets don't fly off, i'm going to have to think somemore on that. Because i was thinking of using a gore model, that would be part of the head where the bullet exited. But this might look a little silly when it's just one of those shots that normally would knock the helmet off.

I guess ill get this head thing sorted first and post it up for testing and feed back, then if that goes well, ill start thinking about the added gore bit.
