[WIP] dss_NightTerror

This is my first map and not exactly amazing but I dig it, and thats all that matters. Screenies are poor quality of course. Enjoy and please leave a comment if you view with words of encouragement, suggestions, whatever. :)


Just like to add that the lighting was done in a right quick hurry so we could play on it last night. I am currently fixing the lighting, adding more, and adding fixtures for all the lights to come out of. :) The graphics for the screenies are pretty bad, these dont do this map justice . Map is kinda eerie :D

What does "dss" stand for? You may want to stick with the "dod" prefix because, as I recall, the last person who tried to come up with a new prefix had the name of his map changed.

dss is my clan. Who will change it? Its basically for my clan to use on my server i host from my other pc. its not a big deal to change it, but is it this forums rule for it to be dod_?

Why release it here if its only for your members on your server ?

I would stick to dss because no one else is gonna run this map anyways :D

@B@D: Well if thats the way it is then alright. Wasnt' really asking anyone to run it if they didnt want to. Just looking for help and ideas. You dont have to be a jerk. :)

@CPL I hear ya, i just picked something at random, instead of going with dod_

@nave the pictures aren't in order. That one goes with another one in the same spot looking the same way with the flashlight on. Was just showing how dark it was in some spot and how easy it is to hide.

Oh you want help and ideas try adding a light_enviroment to this map and dont make comments like its only for my members on my server !
And plenty of mappers here will help you out including my self I was not tring to be a jerk it is just how it sounded to you :)

you are being all sensitive about your map its kool man and yes you are right you are the one that has to enjoy it but if you want others to enjoy it and run it on their servers also you need to listen to their suggestions .

Getting all sensitive about my map? Um? Not even close there Julia. No offense, but this is the internet. I don't get "sensitive" about things here. I dont know if you took offense to me saying it was "for my server" or not, but nothing was meant by it. It was designed by myself and a few of my friends to play on. Its not an exclusive club or anything, its just not an amazing map and im sure you guys would much rather play on your own.

lets try this again.

always good to get some new mappers for DoD.

B@D is right when he recommends using a light_environment.

For the usage and settings, you might want to take a look at this



I've seen way worse first maps, taking in consideration your detailled overview, so get her a nice lighting and then we'll see about the next step.

wow man thanks. and thanks for not being a douche straight off. my understanding of light_environment is that it "represents" the sun. This is a night map, wouldnt light environment light up the entire map? Ive been suing light_spot and point_spotlight to light stuff up. :)

Thanks man. i dont think my map is THAT bad for my first time, though i will quickly admit it has a long way to go.

You can set your light_environment to a low light setting to simulate the moon as well.

You can see the env_light settings Valve used for thier maps including the night map settings. Check out the settings used for sky_day01_09.

see, its sky_day_ thats why i was so confused about lighting. all the skies are like sky_day and stuff.

I actually tried to use sky_day01_09, but i dont understand skyboxes at all. Currently im using the tool/black texture for the walls. :(

@cpl. how low? and cant i place light_environemtn anywhere in the map?

I have a few things im working on.

-Rain sound all over the map.
I cant seem to be able to find the rain sound built into hammer. Im sure there has to be one somewhere. I am using this tutorial. No raid sound here. No ambient/weather anything http://www.interlopers.net/index.php?page=tutorials&id=1840

-Trying to get light fixtures in props to light up to make it look better. I use alot of those red caged lights about the place. I have no clue how to do that. :(

Go to map > map properties and type in "sky_day01_09" where it says skybox texture name. Then use the "tools/toolsskybox" where you want your sky to show up.

You could set your light_environment to be pitch black if you want to. Its placing in your map doesn't affect what it does.
