[WIP] dod_??? unnamed?

01-06-2008, 12:45 PM
hi guys an thx for checking out this work in progress map.

situated 15 miles north of Argentan and 20 miles north west of flash is a small-medium size village situated in the French countryside.
its been 4 days since the d-days landings and the allied forces have been marching now for approx 30miles with little resistance (war what war) .
Unknown to the troops lies a village that is being held by the axis. With lots of natural foliage and enough cover to support a small army its up to the allies to retake and secure.

an suggestions welcome,

thx to everyone in the community!

especially all the modelers for putting in the effort! and making mappers life easier. thx

approx 3 days work so far into the map. a few glinches but hopefully ready very soon.

p.s the map is currently unnamed , as i dont have enough knowledge on the facts of ww2 i thought i would let the community decide the name of this map! preferable something small neat and true to ww2 to honour thos that fell.

thx again guys !!!! and thx again for checkout !

it looks really good. in some screens it remembers me the old dod_campagne in 1.3

as suggestion, try not to put a flag near the spawns exit xD
PD: for name try dod_sliwoodville :P

LOL, no comment.

ps the last flg is inside the spawn [only jokin]

Looks pretty good. I like it. Concerned about FPS though with all that foliage.

01-06-2008, 01:19 PM
just to reassure u all i normally get an average 40-60fps on official maps , i spent alot of time on the layout and optimization , i am getting an average of 90 fps and there is still room for more optimization b4 release.

EXACTLY what I was going to say. Very nice and natural looking.

2 suggestions:

1) don't use the ubiquitous DoD wagon that's in every map.

2) please give it an easy to remember, catchy name. I suggest dod_splinter and you do not have to give me credit. It's not taken in the database.

dod_splinter. Think about it.

thx for the advice i will consider, and know what ur saying but its such a lovely cart . i must admit i would much prefer a real location, splinter sounds like teenage mutant ninja turtles LOL

Well, splinter is more than that. But I understand you have your associations with the word.

A town name is fine but...Flash, Donner - not really town names. Kalt is cold in German, and is easy to pronounce - one syllable.

Anyway, just a suggestion. Pay me no mind...lol.

01-06-2008, 03:12 PM
no i like translation. but i think a map name should be 5 letters or less. dont ask me why.

01-06-2008, 03:49 PM
My suggestion: dod_arbre

Finding 5 letter or less actual names that haven't been used is hard.

Lessay is another possiblity.
Lessay in Normandy 1944 (http://www.normandie44lamemoire.com/versionanglaise/fichesvillesus/lessayus2.html)

L'arbre you mean 433km south of argentan , approx 4.5hrs in a car.
like it, bit far from the d-day landings but i could change the dates.
maybe 3 weeks after the landings.
lessay ohhh now tht sounds interesting.

01-06-2008, 04:08 PM
Actually I just meant arbre as in tree, given your map's foliage. Similar to the kalt~cold name.
Lessay might be your best bet ;)

You may have a problem with your date and location if you wish to keep with WWII ground force battle chronology. The Allies had one hell of time getting as far as your location and Operation Cobra did not occur until between the 24th and 28th of July. Doing a little research did find this however and you may wish to use the name as well as it is well suited. "In the morning of 7th August, the Germans launched a major armoured counter-attack on Mortain from both sides. Operation Lüttich had been planned from start to finish by the General Headquarters of the Wehrmacht, against the advice of the military leaders on the ground. Its objective, imposed by Hitler in person, was to smash through American lines and reach the bay of Mont St Michel, some thirty kilometers distant, slicing through the Avranches bottleneck along the way. Cut off from their supplies, Patton’s troops would be isolated and become sitting ducks."

Mortain is about 25 miles west of Argentan and about 30 Sout West of Caen. With this the chronology and location would work. And a good name may be "dod_Operation Lüttich or dod_Lüttich.

Good Luck and a great looking map, hope to play it some day. I am currently just entering my first stages of learning how to do it myself.

amazing stuff, thx bloodbath. i missed all this at school. :-(
Mortian, luttich both are really good. there goes my 5 letters or less.

now all i need is someone good at photoshop to help with a mini map, my minimaps look crap at best.

01-06-2008, 04:58 PM
I am fair at photoshop, I did some reading on making the mini's but have not as of yet. If you would like me to I could try and give you a hand with it.

I like how you have a story backdrop for it.

Only thing I can say is:

1) it looks a bit too much like flash? Throw a creek in maybe?
2) on the road, use the blended grass texture and paint alpha under the road so grass does not show on your road.

I like the look of this map.
Quite different, but very attractive !
Hope to play it real soon !!

Hey Sli,

Im new here and haven't made a mini yet but im a fast learner. I'm pretty good in CS2. I have a couple clan mates that have done 1 or 2 for our maps on our servers. But if Mr. Bloodbath is on the job that's cool too.

Take care and you have some really nice levels,
