since no one wants to help with this ... would anyone be willing to make a dod_cal_caen ... basically have it be allies vs axis rather than brits ...

There is a dod_caen that has allied vs axis. It is done by modifying a part of the bsp server side through a text file. I forget how you do it but I have done it before back when I had a server for dod 1.3. I modified flag locations, axis vs allied, also added custom models that all were activated server side and didn't have to be downloaded by the client.
Could anyone point him in the right direction? I think this would be the easiest way to do what u want.
People actually still play 1.3 ? :)

Ripent.exe, part of zoners compile tools, can extract the entity data from a .bsp in the form of a .ent file, which opens with notepad. Edit the .ent file and merge it back into the bsp again. Like etfninja says, it's only the server that needs the modified .bsp.
Ripent uses a command line, but I'm sure there was another util that let you add things while you were running the map. Dunno what that's called, though.
