Here's the latest map I've been working on, dod_fall. It's essentially dod_flurry (http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?t=69811) in an Autumn setting!
After I create a new overview, It's pretty much ready for a private test. Then a public release immediately after!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
:)
Great ambiance as usual, but the Flak is getting through the net of cammo.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!Create something unique using different textures maybe? Come up with your own ideas?
I see the same skybox in five or six maps now.
I see you make comments on other people maps telling them to do different or try different settings, but here you are doing the same thing they are.
Nothing innovative.

I entered this thread because I read dod_fail.

i love flurry. the new fall atmosphere you created is great.
the only negative thing that immediatelly came to my mind was that the ground texture looks a little bit too much scaled up in all of the pics. but that impression may be wrong.
other than that there is nothing to complain about. very well done.
as usually looking foward to this :)

Exactly what I was gonna say. You should find a new ground texture. Preferably one with a bit more variation (as in, not just ALL leaves, since the trees still have a considerable amount), but still looks good tiling. Overall, though, this looks very nice and I'm glad to see you have maps of basically all seasons down. :D

Good suggestions ! The current texture is a custom 2 texture blend (grass and leaves) I will fart around with scale and possibly add some more color variation to the leaf texture.
thx !

Very nice. I played dod_flurry, and really like it, so I am looking forward to this.
I agree with the comments about the ground texture. It seems a little low-res, and slightly repetitious. I think it might need some green as well, just so that it fits in with the trees.
Other stuff
- Some of the telephone wires look quite thick, while others look thinner.
- None of the trees cast shadows (overlays could help with this)
- The lighting looks a touch flat, since there isn't much contrast between the shadowy and the lit sections.
Things that could be added if the budget will allow for it:
- Some prop based rocks to add variety.
- Tents around a fire, with cups, food etc scattered around.
- Big displacement rocks with trees on top.
- A couple of extra landmarks on route to the bridge, such as a bunker, water tower, castle, barn, farm etc
- Maybe some trenches
- Some areas containing flower detail sprites
- A couple of extended eye candy areas, like the shooting range cs_militia.
- A side/back section that is more urban, and that leads into the forest.

If the map is going to be gloomy, a 3d skybox rainbow prop could look cool

Hopefully, episode 2 will have some good stuff you can use as well.

now that its mentioned i have to agree on that one.
the only noticable shadow area i could find in the pics was under the flak-net. adding a little bit more contrast by creating shadows/ a different kind of light may look good.
but there is one thing you should really avoid: a rainbow in the skybox :D

Hee hee! I know, but they are grossly under represented in video games. I want more rainbows dagnabbit!

You know, I've never found that rainbows and violence went together. I'm more than willing to be proven wrong though.
If you're just going to release a completely new map that's simply a re-texturized version of another map you've made, it won't really appeal to people :\
But on the other side, I think you went a bit extreme with the ground being 100% covered with leaves :P

In a forest, a lot of the ground will be covered with leaves, but not the whole thing. You may want to mess with the alpha a little bit and get more grass in there.

Well, his maps are different and interesting for the most part. Flurry has to be one of the best DoD maps out there now.

thats a nice tex but the one you used before was very nice too. would it be possible to use both in order to add some variety or would that look weird?

Probably not, unless they tile seamlessly.
If each texture in a blend tiles seamlessly then it will continue to be seamless when it is made into a blend. The issue is whether or not the color and style would match, but at least the color could be modified.

You may be able to make one grass texture tile and then have two different leaf blend textures to overlay on the grass through the .vmt, but I personally like the new one. Nice job, nave.

What would you guys think of det map with a dod_colmar kind of set-up? With both teams trying to destroy stuff? The bridge would be the bomb depot.

I dunno if it would be a bit too open for detonation style play.

I don't know much about mapping, how hard would it be to make two versions?
ultranew_b
10-04-2007, 08:13 PM
It wouldn't be hard at all to make 2 versions. It would take about an hour to convert it over to det style.

Go for it ultra. Sounds like fun!
JCC
I think detonation could work well because the outermost targets are quite a ways out of the way and having the back and forth thing with flags is kind of annoying. As a det target there would have to be more legit defenses that would be nice.
Hopefully the bridge isn't much of a choke for all combat to be forced there, though.

It can sometimes be a magnet for snipers/MGs, but maybe that can be solved by having a few loose TNT packs in the vicinity of the bridge, but not too close.
piu piu
10-05-2007, 01:35 PM
there could also be a destroyed rowing boat somewhere near (or far away?) the bridge which also has tnt in it - which would quietly tell the story of a few soldiers who wanted to carry away some tnt but didnt make it.
