I've been absent from the scene for over a year now, so consider this a return of sorts, but let's forget that and get on with business!

dod_harvest (comp 01)

It was through the support I get for this map (even to this day) that made me consider returning to mapping. Harvest is as it was when I released it in beta 1, back in April of 2006. I cooked up several revisions and upgrades, my favorite was a winter makeover that cranked up FPS (after all, ice is only a texture ;) ) along with necessary adjustments to my mapping technique. After all, I was just a beginner! Here's the bad news though: I had an uh-oh computer moment recently and lost all of my existing .vmf and .bsp version of Harvest. All of it, the pre-betas, the revisions, gone! So now I have the task of downloading my own map, decompiling it and taking it from there. To this day there are still plans on the table to finish this one... it was tough because I challenged the limitations of the engine with all the open spaces and didn't quite win that battle in terms of FPS.

dod_napoli (comp 02)

Something I haven't shared with the DOD community was the map that I slaved over during the long summer days of 2006. The map was for the most part 95% completed, but life has a way of happening sometimes, and I pretty much abandoned this one, and mapping altogether about a year ago. Now that I've returned, I see that another map has been released under the same name (apparently a 1.3 remake). I'm sure I did my homework, because I never found a napoli in the 1.3 database, and I also reserved napoli back in July of 2006. But you know what, I don't mind! I'll just cook up another name for it.

As the name would imply though, it is an Italian themed map in a multi-tiered, dense, sun-drenched city. It was originally conceived as an objective based map, but was later converted to a typical point-control map. Photographic evidence!

As it stands now, I'm in school and obviously that's my top priority... so that slows down production a bit. Also, I'm on the verge of assembling a new computer that should handle my gaming and mapping needs quite well... but we're not quite there yet. It's gonna be a bit of time before I get the ball rolling again, but I'm just putting this on the radar for everyone.

Happy gaming!

As far as Napoli is concerned sorry ok comp I am guilty as charged.

To be honest I never even consulted the database as it was a remake of the 1.3 map dod_napoli so that's just what I called it. It was originally a Action Half Life map that [SAS]==Colster== converted to dod 1.3 way back.

So sorry once again

Hey, don't sweat it! I wasn't disappointed or upset at all, just a little bit confused. I was tossing around a lot of name ideas back then, so I certainly have some other backup names I like if I can't think of anything else I like.

Well, much to my surprise dod_harvest is under the knife once again! Anyone familiar with the original map will notice that this revision is almost completely new. Save for one structure and the general theme, the layout is going to be completely different. So why keep the Harvest moniker? Well, I'm finally creating the map I originally envisioned, now that I have a much better understanding of the engine and mapping in general.

With no interesting development images to share, I will reveal this much: the new version is inspired by the orange maps. No, not the rudimentary level design, or the lack of interesting visuals, but the IMMEDIACY and fast-pace. The new version is around 1/2 the size of the original map with new, interesting layout features and much stronger visuals.

I can live with the changes......but you are keeping it rainy? I hope?

I love the lighting. It's a nice change of the usual dark/smoggy/orange-ish lighting I see all the time.

UPDATE

I can't make up my mind! The "new" Harvest I talked about in my previous post will probably be worked into its own project... after a lot of thought I couldn't help leaving the original creation dead, especially after all the support it got. So I'm reworking, updating and optimizing the original version as we speak.

Sorry... the rain had to go. That doesn't mean there won't be ANY precipitation though... *hint*

I love the lighting. It's a nice change of the usual dark/smoggy/orange-ish lighting I see all the time.

Are you commenting on the screens for the Napoli map or the original Harvest?
