[REL] German Assault with M43 cap.

From this thread (http://www.dayofdefeat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74399).

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/9359/m43capsy6.jpg

It replaces the default German assault class model and gives him a M43 fieldcap instead of a helmet. The model passes the consistency check and works with sv_pure 0/1 servers and those with player models in the whitelist.

I've adjusted the colour on H4WkY's original cap to make it match the uniform grey plus created normal and exponent maps so phong works with it.

Credits where due:

213 - for the M43 cap model.
H4WkY - the original cap texture.
Me - a bit of this and that.

The message you have entered is too short.

One teensy tiny issue Jed.

You recompiled the assault class model but it is using the rifleman class VTF ;)

Or maybe it works different than I am understanding.

Trp. Jed
09-02-2007, 02:31 PM
Err what are you on about old chap? :D

There is no rifleman class VTF/VMT - all the DoD models (by default) use the two textures in player/german which is just a generic body and gear texture. This uses just those two plus the custom texture for the cap.

Wile E Coyote

Ahh I finally figured it out

I was confused because you used the exact same naming scheme as the class-based models, so I thought it was that you modified (uses the vtf texture german_boda.vtf).

Now I see that you simply specified the default texture german_body.vtf. The confusion on my part came from both custom MDL's having the exact same name.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Skinned to match my previous skins.

Sorry about no in-games. No time. Maybe somebody else can do that.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Skinned to match my previous skins.

Go for it. In fact, I release the source for it in my player model kit post if you want to compile it to use a unique skin.

BTW, when you're "back in the game" that compiler pack might interest you as you could not only allocate seperate textures to each model but re-map the UV's if you wanted so you could have seperate arms for patches, etc.

Maybe someone will make a *proper* US Airborne model now ;)

Those rendered German M43 caps are awesome work!!!!! Valve should consider making them official. It'd be a good thing if the sniper class also had those caps on as standard.

Great great work, just beautifull. I was only talking a day or 2 ago about this very nice skin to guys on the OFAB server, saying how nice it is to see guys stepping out of the circle of normal skins ext, to do somthing compleatly different we havern't seen in DoD:source befor. Im hoping by other skinners seeing this will encourage them to think hay you know what about that, or what about this. Myself i would like to see maybe a british soldier like in the old dod, you know guys that would be somthing. Anyway enough of me babberling, great work, and thankyou for your time and hard work in making these new axis feild caps 10/10 :)

And masq: thanks alot! I know DAFONT is the place to be, but never found a "lookalike/that font" :). Thanks anyways!

i don't think i've ever seen a cap with stuff on it, but a helmet yes. in fact you could probably make a lot of stuff for all the helmets. you just apply thin strips of polygons onto the helmet, then texture those. we can even extrude along the helmet to make the straps. if you want to make airborne soldiers you can make those beef jerky rags they have underneath their webbing.

Trp. Jed
09-07-2007, 11:57 AM
Main issue with putting grass and such on the helmet would be that the extra height would probably break the bounds of the consistency check. If you put it "around" the helmet but made it not stand much taller you might get away with it.

And if you want to put a cap on the sniper, all the files you need are in the custom model kit I posted. It would be a 5 minute job for someone to do.

i would like to use that cap on the kar98 class as seen in that gmod pic http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/6/13/1171968/germancap.jpg by masq87.

is there a difference between using that in gmod and in dod itself or does that mean you have a working version for the kar-class, masq?

in my screenshots the soldier's class is assult, but is holding a kar...

How?i must rename the .mdl files and releated?

For example "german_rifleman.mdl" ?

You could do. You could just change the output file in the kit to rifleman and compile it but he'd have the assault kit. Easiest trick would be to decompile the rifleman/sniper model and copy the SMDs for the body into the kit and just keep the cap SMD files. Then when you compile it it just replaces the helmet with a cap.

In real-life those field caps would not really offer much protection against rocks, stones, hard objects, etc during combat apart from showing off. What was the real point in wearing them anyway ?

Not everyone likes having their heads rained on or the sun in their eyes ;) Helmets protect you from the elements, but they are really heavy and really inconvenient. Wearing a helmet day in and day out for 365 days a year can really take a toll. I know, I am the voice of experience.

Trp. Jed
09-17-2007, 05:57 PM
Yeah I only wore mine when I got yelled at. Out in the field, especially on patrols it was a headscarf or comfort cap. Helmets are a pain in the ass on a raid when you smack your head diving through a window frame and the bloody brim gets stuck over your eyes.

Nothing breaks up an effective CQB like someone shouting "I can't see sh*t!"

Could someone please post a tutorial on how to install this. I'm having some troubles installing this. It looks like it sees the model but not the textures because it comes out in a pink and black checkerd hat...lol.

Did you install wile's pack? You have to choose one of the .vtf's from the 3 folders.

Buddy_88
09-18-2007, 08:22 PM
Yes, It was Wile's pack and I want to do the whermacht version but I'm having trouble installing it, so a brief post on how to install these files after extracting to the dod folder would be great.

213
09-18-2007, 09:24 PM
After extracting, you'll see another archive, extract that to reveal the "dod" folder. Now place the 3 main files in the "dod/materials/models/player/german" directory of the folder you just extracted. Open the wehrmacht folder and put those in the player/german directory as well. Now copy paste the entire "dod" folder into your day of defeat source directory.

I'd doubt the Germans would want to wear their helmuts 365 days a year -

the sniper could wear a huge stack of grass on his body!

perhaps he could wear a hooded smock like this

That cap was commonly referred to as the 'Crusher Cap', it's actually based on the old pattern of caps worn during WW1 and lacks an internal stiffener, hence it's rather crushed appearance. They were actually quite popular by all accounts and originals are highly sought after today.
