[FINAL] dod_isernia (3 diff. versions)

For those who loved to play dod_isernia 1.3, here is my rendition of Source Isernia.
I made Isernia, then modified two more maps off the same design.
Sorry I tried valiantly to make overviews for the map but failed.
I read the tutorial and tried for over an hour to make the overviews. But the Run: vtex.exe mapname.TGA I could not get it to run in the console nor did I know if I was suppose to run it in hammer?
Any help is appreciated thanks.

Yeah, not the most popular map from 1.3. But at least that one had some feel to it, places to go, places to hide. This one has no moxie, ya know "no soul". Give it some ambience

Well guys what I did was remove the flag cap voice because with a small map that has 7 flags in it, it can get very annoying. I do have some ambience in it like some birds when you enter and one has a distant train affect and the two snow maps have wind blowing through.
And the night map has fog in it.

Isernia 1.3 has a cult following at SunLit Games and we will give your maps a run through today.
The source_isernia is beta in visual polish but has high fps
Rooftops are fun
Nice file size at 1.46MB bzip2
Each room is individual in props and colour. This is true to the original map but feels a little jarring in Source. It will make sharing a location with teammates clear once they become familiar with the layout.
There is push spawn protection
A minimap is needed for the number of rooms, interconnections and roof tops .
Some early observations
Starting off in the ally spawn
- Exiting the spawn by the two side doors requires crouching but no crouching is required to come back in
- some of the glass windows are bulletproof, others not. Maybe make them all breakable
- black ground under shrubs and light coming through map edge
- catch shoulder on some shutters as you run by
- support for roof runs into the glass of the window

- the bull rush leaves stick through the wall
- in fact why use bullrushes instead of grasses in the streets?

The vegetation in snow and snownight works.
The leaves do not stick through the walls on these two maps although there still are some odd shadows below vegetation.
On all 3 versions , after the Motd and selecting teams , there was a totally black screen with a bright light substituting for the crosshairs.
Was this intentional?

- can climb ladder smoothly but once at the top, movement is blocked
by the window
- the blue wallpaper does not work on the floors
- the sliding door doesnt seem to fit into the idea of a village
This door and the sliding wall in the ally spawn are not obvious or intuitive.

Some early observations

If you remember the old isernia the doors by the spawn as well as other doors were low for crouching purposes. Although I did not have low ceilings in the map I suppose I should raise them up and stick an arch on them for better looks.
- some of the glass windows are bulletproof, others not. Maybe make them all breakable
- black ground under shrubs and light coming through map edge
I also knew a couple of windows were bullet proof. I made them that way on purpose since everyone always shoots them out (which I too love to do) :) But if everyone would rather they all be breakable then so be it, no problem there.

I will need to move the clip texture out aways to make the walls smooth
- support for roof runs into the glass of the window
Yes I saw that and forgot to go b ack and fix it.

I know that is a problem sometime, you know those darn gardeners LOL. ;) I'll fix that.

I use the cattails for better hiding since the grass entities are so small that it takes a lot to cover.

I had planned on raising the roof of that building but had already made the window at the top thus moving walls messes up windows for me. I can just delete the wall; raise the top higher and then re add the window.

What happened was this, what you are seeing is not a gunsight, its the sun outside of the map. After I had made the map what I had forgot to do as I always have is make sure the start lines (blue, red and green lines you have in the screens is where you first come into the game. I didn't realize I left it in outer space. I do not know how to bring that inside the map and there is no way I would move the map to that grid and have to move everything else with it.
if someone knows how to move those three lines in then please let me know? if not I am sorry.

Oh by the way I did try to make a mini map with no luck at all and I even printed out the instructions and went over it step by step with no improvement.

We ran your maps back to back. Players were very glad to see the return of Isernia
isernia_v1
There were two red ERRORS on the map
The first was the shrubs with purple flowers

SunLit regulars could see them but new players saw the ERROR.
isernia_snow did NOT have the red ERROR in this area
The second was in the church on the outer face of the confessionals. The red ERROR was in both isernia_v1 and isernia_snow_s1
The axis spawn room wall had purple checkerboards for new players.
SunLit regulars saw the correct wall.
Finally, players could walk behind the oven in the bakery and see and shoot out.
I hope you are taking these comments in the spirit that they are offerred. Fans of Isernia would love to see a polished version and you've made a good start on the layout. :)

No problem Rosie, I am taking it in good spirits. I had no idea some could not see the models cause I only used dod models. I'll have to change them then.
I already went through v1 twice and added the steps for the step up floors, raised all the doorways, fixed the support beams, I just removed the ends is all and it still looks good.
The shudders I fixed by moving them further back. The one solid wall with shudders not allowing you to pass after climbing the ladder I just moved the entire wall back along with the shudders.
I fixed the black dirt and replaced it with cellar floor dirt.
The corner dirt that was showing nodraw I just turned that into water.
I removed the wallpaper flooring as well.
Now I need to go in and fix the errors you were talking about, thanks. I will let you know when you can redownload v1 and give it a try. :)
I am glad somebody likes isernia at least. :D
Once V1 is finished I will then go back and fix the other two.

Ok Rosie I went through and fixed all the mistakes and errors and added a few extra props to shoot like crates and barrels. Also the room that you had to crouch to climb is higher now and I added ramps to that deck since I had to raise it higher.
Fixed the over by putting clip around it so it's no accessible any longer.
Plus I added some ambient distant battle fire.

Thank you snail. How do I load it into the BSP file though? I've never done an overview before. I did try the other day but came up empty.
Like I said I ran the tut off in print and went through step by step. I had everything down pat, the red line for line up and even cropped the photo down to just the map but where do I run "vtex.exe dod_source_isernia_v1.TGA at? I tried to run it in my console after sv_cheats 1 and it said unknown command?
Well it's taken me 7 years to even find out how to make maps, so at least I am getting there slowly but surely. :D
I hate it when I can't understand everything. It's awful getting older, maybe I should join the old farts group eh? LOL. ;)

You can join our Old Farts group... lol.
The vtex is run outside of the game/Steam area. Directly from the Steam directory, it is a stand alone program.
If you wish to load the files into the bsp, you use the Pakrat program. A great tool...I would do this for you but then the bsp would need to be reloaded by everyone again or give it another name.

in both maps:
- Odd diffuse "black" shadows on the wall
- Space where roof top does not meet the wall, seen from above and below
And a reminder to everyone that if you get the error, "Your map differs from the servers" delete the old version off your hardrive as the new fixed versions have the same name.

Rosie I'm so sorry, I went through and did not see them. I will fix them once again. But at least thank God my maps only compiles in minutes yippee. :D
I'll fix them now and then start working on the 3rd map.
I guess I got too excited about the map when I decided to make 2 other versions and jumped the gun before actually proof testing the first one. I learned my lesson there. :)

I have spent the last 3 days on these maps and pretty sure all errors and bad textures have been fixed. Like I said it only takes 10 minutes to compile so no problem there. I should have them ready tomorrow, I am kind of worn out spending close to 20 hours on them; my wife is tapping her foot with a smirk LOL. ;)

No harm done Qaddafi Duck, I am just glad that someone likes my maps is all. I've been doing this for almost 6 months now and like I told my wife, it's fun to do, at least until your brain shuts down for the night LOL.
I've been wanting to make maps since I started playing dod 1.0 in 2001 and could never get the hang of old hammer until source came along and one of my members showed me a few things and it was like the starting gates at a horse race, "And he's off!" :)

Can you please rename your maps to show that they are a later version, with a _v2 or _b2? Something like:
dod_isernia_v2
dod_isernia_snow_v2
dod_isernia_snownight_v2
It will help players avoid the error, "your map differs"

Yep, I thought about that myself Rosie; will do. besides I added a small outhouse next to the main café as well and added another breakable window. Each version is a little different. I don't want anyone getting too bored with it too fast. :)

Ok folks I went through with a fine-toothed comb and fixed any and everything that was found by you and myself.
I added an outhouse and a smaller building on the roof where the roof was so wide and begged for another building LOL.

I also added more overlays on the building for eye candy as well. And I added more ambient since Duck mentioned it needed more. Thanks Duck you were right. :)

Paddy I am so sorrry I missed your post. As for the name of the old version center flag I do not know? The center flag in mine is just the cafe area. :)
