"Next-Gen" Visuals

I hope this topic is allowed to be posted here.
This is regarding DODS but I can't tell more about it.

I recently played Gmod10 and saw some very very nice shaders, and the way it is used.

This gave me a confidence in what the engine CAN do.

So, because I need to start making a mod for the things to work I have in mind, I have to focus more on coding.

We had: envmaps -> normalmaps -> phong -> ....what's next?
This was all applied to playermodels, weapons.....what's next?

I will try to get some very nice new things to work and show them to you.
But help is always welcome, that's why I ask if there is someone who like to take a shot at the great posibilities of this engine and create the basics for games/mods to use which has not been made before like this.

So if you got some coding/shader skills and looking for a challenge, let me know.

EDIT/**UPDATE**
I just did some testing and it looks quite good, even better than expected.
From this point I can't tell you anything yet.
Hope to show you a small tease of this project soon.

Man that's almost as bad as saying "I have a Secret. I can't tell you."
Can't wait to see what your labour turns up, I for one think Source is a great engine, given how flexible it has been to be upgraded to keep up with the times.

Sorta true, but there are projects I start by asking for a team and if you read the topics closely you can see that there is just not enough people who are offering help, so then the project will not continue or just slowly.

That is what I mentioned or try to tell if you read closely ;)

At least I try ;)

I have to discover everything by MYSELF, and try to get some people to help out but most of the time there is not anyone who does help.

There are some projects I am working on that I cannot finish cause I got stuck, that happens and I DID mention it, and aksed for help or even got help offered but that either didn't help or the person did not got back to me.
So you cannot blame it all on me.

I just like to have some more support on helping out.
I'm not doing those "simple" reskins anymore, that is basics to me, I want to go further and that needs some practise, discovery etc., so please respect that.

I am tring to bring something new into the DOD community.

Here it is, very EARLY stage:

There is definitely a possible way of bringing next gen visuals into the world of Source. I'll show you a picture I made using a skin that was made 4x the default skin textures.

http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/8509/jamesll3.jpg
(Made in Gmod-Used to be one of the default male citizens from HL2. I didn't make the skin/model. It's even better up close :O)

Now, if someone was able to make ALL visuals as fancy as that, then you got some awesome next-gen visuals for DoD:S.

Good luck on what you're doing.

That just looks like a higher poly model of a head. I don't find that "next gen" to be honest. imho, what defines next gen is shader and lighting quality. you can have low polygon models that look great when you know what parts to detail and what parts to leave rough.(metal gear solid 2 comes to mind) but the art itself, like the shaders, textures, lighting makes the biggest difference.

Well what I meant about "Next Gen" Visuals is the following:

Ofcourse what I am working on or want to work on will not be Next Gen, hence the quotes.
But I do want to go a bit further than the game is now.
The engine can do much more, and I can't explain all the details about the engine so you have to trust me on that, and those who are familiar with the engine know what I am talking about.

I am working on some things for default dods, but also on future mods.
And will make shaders and it's usage that haven't been used like this before.

If I had Gmod10 then you'll see how the shaders/lighting on the models are really really sexy for a source game. It's just an example of how far you can push the engine and that'd be possible for DoD:S too.

I understand by what BERSERKER is saying about "next-gen" though, so I didn't take it literally or thought Crysis visuals.

I can't wait for more previews of progress :D

Another reason, Riley, not sure if you totally understand, why textures shouldn't be that high of resolution is that it still causes lag, even with today's equipment. A 4096^2 texture will definitely bring you down a hefty amount of FPS if it's applied to even the player models in dods.

Beserker you are like the saviour of the dod community man, doing great work, it's cool to see they you are working over everything eventually. Making the game look crisp and everything. Keep it up you sexybeast. I'm hoping one day you'll release a visuals pack with everything included, cause I just can't keep up with your work.

Willie Coyote added phong shaders and normals for player and weapon models, maybe you should make a team and work together on DODSVU version 2?

Thanks alot for your support.
What your are saying about "the" pack, is what I actually had in mind ;)
It might take a while but, it's worth waiting for ;)
But still, every support like helping out is apreciated, there are still some things I'm stuck at.

seriuosly man, you have to post this on the cdg.net forums. you'll get a lot more response from modders and what not and probably a lot of help. if you won't, i will...with your permission of course...but ill do without it if i must.

Hm for some reason first person does not show correctly.

EDIT:
It seems that the engine only pics muzzleflash4.vtf and not muzzleflash4.vmt first.....

Anyone?

Btw, is there anyone who got this refract for firstperson view to work in DODS?
