i was looking at the preview of class based skins one of which had a great autumn camouflage smock texture. would be nice if someone actually made a custom coat with the characteristics of a smock. it can also work online if it is within valve's designated hitbox area.

the general shape of the smock is quite puffy at the abdominal area and narrow at the shoulders because it drapes down more and is softer than the wool like coat of the original model(which is boxier at the shoulder area). the sleeves at the wrist are elastic. the garment also drapes down a lot so the coat would hang down quite a bit. here's are examples well done in call of duty 3:

as you can see it uses both shaders and polygons to make the garment look puffy and 3d. their use of normal mapping is superb and creates realistic looking flaps and overlapping of the fabric. it would be great and add a whole lot of variety and visual improvements to the game. and note the bottom part of the smock, how it's irregular and has a wrinkled quality.

i would model it myself, but i severely lack the expertise.

Yeah, I admire how awesome CoD's designers make their textures, even though most seem photoskinned (which isn't a bad thing necessarily). Their shader work is awesome, and this would be wonderful if possible.

I guess they kept the resolution down for optimization, or they put all the gear in with each individual model skin.

Exactly why does it seem photoskinned? Because it doesn't look cartoony? :D

Did you see the vid's on how they made the models? They actually put uniforms on mannequins and laser scanned them into a 3D app. Same with human faces.

I don't know whether to be impressed or laugh at the overkill...

I don't know whether to be impressed or laugh at the overkill...It depends. Maybe it was time/cost saving measure. They probably only rented the equipment.

What I noticed about console games or even pc games now, is that they lower or keep low resolution texture but get the details from normalmapping.

This is not my favorite way of getting details, I think it's cheap.

This can look good sometimes, but when close to a character or model or whatever it just looks crap.

I have my own personal skins which are very much like the ones in those pictures and use wile's class based skin as a base ( but edited them so they have different helemts, faces and markings etc) , if i get the time i'll try and upload them for you

Thats because they have lower spec hardware than PC games and have to fit into a specific memory footprint. The PS3 has what, 256Mb video memory and the Xbox 360 512Mb shared with the main RAM?

Seriously, you CAN'T do that much texture wise with that much RAM and I think most of their target audience are running of standard TV's so they can get away with it. The HDTV market is probably less than 10%.

Thanks man. But what about the jacket? That's the major difference in a smock is what the guy has on his torso, model wise.

wile has done a excellent job on his smock to make it at least look very convincing that the model is wearing it so you won't realise it ingame

Agreed...it looks great in-agame. I just tried it, it does look like a smock.

I was against using it at first, because of the sleeve issue...but it looks too good to not use it.

lol...sometimes you have to take what you can get.

I don't see Valve doing this, but that's just my opinion.
