Rebuilding a Map?

Let me cut to the chase, my current mapping project (my first major one ever), is a recreation of 1.3 donner. Basically what I am doing is rebuilding donner from scratch, using the source version for reference as to the dimensions, and modifying the layout as extensively as I can so that it looks and feels a lot more like the old map. Putting the bunker back in, putting that big tower in the allied sniper building, etc. etc. I know something like this was already done with a map called dod_thunder (a source one) but I want to go even further with the layout changes.

What I want to know is, would there be a problem with me doing a WIP topic and (hopefully) an eventual release on these forums? I know that some forums have rules against modifications of stock maps: i.e. de_dust_2000_1337.

But I do plan on doing a pretty large amount of work on this, my intention is that it will be more a recreation of the old map than just a simple cut and paste of the stock one. I am rebuilding it from scratch, but I figure I'd be a fool to not make use of the stock donner for some reference. I'd just like to make sure it's all kosher.

I'd appreciate it if one of the mods or someone who at least knows about these things could clarify this for me. I didn't see any stickies regarding such a map being a problem, but I figured I'd ask.

Thanks.

I know there is a gentleman here that has made dod_avalanche@night, flash@night, along with other people making remakes of 1.3 maps.

You don't have to worry about anything. I would welcome a 1.3 port of Donner myself (if done in a professional manner).

When/if you do have some WIP screens, please share them.

Ok, thanks.

BTW, I know I may be flamed for being unoriginal with this project, but that's ok. I'd like build and complete something and learn more about putting a map together (and satisfy some nostalgia) before I move on to something more creative.

As far as it being professional, I can't promise anything, as this is my first project. But I will be doing my damndest.

I will hopefully have some WIP shots within a few days.

Just a couple of suggestions.

1) Use the search function when looking for tuts.
2) Check out the DoD-Federation forums and their tutorial page. Lots of good info and links.

Good luck!

I have already found the dod-federation tuts page. One of the best resources I've ever seen. :)

OK, get going on this - and then give us the old thunder map while you're at it. :D

I can't imagine anybody would want to flame you for recreating the feel of 1.3 Donner.

Hopefully not. But some people may be of the opinion that it's not worth re-making a map that's already been ported, or that people should be focussing on new maps.

But you guys are probably more polite than that. I am used to more of a rude bunch when it comes to anything on the internet. :)

Only few men can achieve a successful product on their first project. Some fail countless times. Be ready for failure. :o
