[WIP] My secret project... dod_paris (work name)

A few weeks after "some map I can't talk about" was released, I started working on another project. I put it to sleep temporarily while I was finishing my last year of college (woo!). The project is:

dod_paris (working name, it might get called dod_streetsofparis) is a project of architectural studying. I'm personally mesmerized by the architecture of almost all the buildings on the streets of Paris. This map won't have a main cue on the Eiffel tower, but rather on the interesting setup the streets of the city can create.

This map is planned. This means I have aggressively analysed other maps to come up with a viable game play. It includes nice narrow passages, broken down streets (thanks, Paris! hehe), a main Plaza which is roughly inspired by Place Pigalle, smaller streets, and even vertical gameplay (some buildings can be entered).

This is a big project. I'm finding it hard to create nice architecture whilst trying to get the map to a bearable speed, so a lot of custom texture are in place already, as well as some of the community's finest models (such as the Citroen).

Enough blabber, now onto the screenshots. This first batch is unlit, and will be the only screenshots I give for a while, as I wanted this to be a surprise (:p) The map is WAY more evolved right now.

Original idea Dash ! Pigalle is a very particular area , one of the most touristic also. Watching your wip layout make me think that you have planned to map a well-know monument, am i right?

If you need any architectural advice let me know, i'm living in Paris ;)

Make most of the Buildings enterable, put plenty of sexy cover, and a couple of roofs that you can snipe from and i'll love you forever.

New Screenshots, see first post

I'm still unsure of the time of day this map will be in. I'm really into making dusk/dawn maps, and it feels like this map could use that kind of setting. On the other side, there aren't many "noon" maps out there, and Paris would be a good candidate for such map.

(by the way, I'm conscious of the invisible face on the third screenshot :P)

I'm sorry to have to say this, but I'd rather say that from the start...You don't have the assets to make it look anything like Paris. Unless you have some custom textures, the only thing you're going to end up with is a city very similar to C17 (yet another one) and none of the HL2 textures would apply as parisian.

I know C17's trainstation is based on Gare du Nord, but that's as far as it goes.

I've stated before editing that the texture work is mostly temporary and only a fraction of the buildings are textured correctly.
Also, some of the HL2 textures ARE quite European, which I used to create derivatives for this map.

Please tell me the Paris catacombs will be making an appearance!?!! The tunnels made with human skulls and bones covering its walls.... freaky stuff. Would make an awesome atmosphere.

Would be class if you got some beret wearing resistance models to use in this map, though I don't think that is possible :(

HL2 was largely inspired by Eastern Europe. I believe that the art director of HL2 was born and raised Romania.

of course this is taken from paris catacomb !!.. you MUST go and visit this to get the freakiest trip of your life... you can even go for a night crossing of it.. and take your dinner down there.... for a evening you'll remember all your life !! huuummmmm

supposedly theyre a big part of the reason theres no skyscrapers in the center of the city.

it would be like building on top of swiss cheese.

I don't think the catacombes have anything to do with the lack of skyscrapers in Paris. Urban planning regulations limit the height of buildings for safety, hygiene (depending on the width of the street), and then for patrimonial preservation and aesthetics reasons, depending on the borough. Higher constructions are possible (e.g. Tour Montparnasse is 700-foot high) but require an exceptional authorization .

Now back on topic. :D

Looks interesting. It reminds me a bit of stadtkampf on 1.3. If the game play follows, it could be a very nice map with a distinct feel. Here's hoping you pull it off. Keep it up!
