This comes up a lot but as most of you may know theres a bug in the current release of HLMV for Source where selecting the Normal mapping checkbox it wont "stick".
Several people have posted possibly solutions ranging from clicking the checkbox over and over really fast to messing with the scale.
Well heres my solution and it's so far worked every time I get a problem.
Basically go to the folder where the VMT files for your model are kept and rename it to something else. Load your model and it will come up with a pink/black chequered error texture.
Now, you should find you can now turn on Normal mapping checkbox.
WITHOUT closing HLMV, go back to your texture folder and rename it back to what it should be. Got back to HLMV and press F5 to reload the model. You should find that it loads the model again with the textures this time but the Normal mapping checkbox has stayed on.
As these settings are stored in the registry you should find that everytime you load your model Normal mapping is turned on.
