Compiling playermodel problem

I have decompiled a playermodel and want to recompile.
But when compiled model and/or qc I get an error while loading the model in the HLMV, something like:

"player_model_shared.mdl" or "w_bar.mdl" not found and error.mdl not found.

I know how to compile weapons, but I looked at the options in cannon's compile and selected "character" but maybe I overlooked something.

What to set for:
- Model type
- Reference (american_assault_reference.smd I presume)
- Sequences on/off/manual?
- Collision model on/off?
- Compile model file ("player\american_assault.mdl" I guess)
