Day Of Defeat: Source - Visual Upgrade

Wile E Coyote
03-28-2007, 08:50 PM
Taken from the readme:
When Day of Defeat: Source was first released, there were many people, like myself, who just couldn't help but feel the game had a "rushed" look to it. The models are some of the best I've ever seen, yet a few of the model skins (especially the player models) looked as though they were unfinished. They looked like beta skins. [sic] I personally was absolutely certain there was going to be an update to replace them. It hasn't happened yet. [sic] The goal of this add-on pack is to bring DOD:S to full life WITHOUT affecting performance very much, if at all. All the skins are meant to keep the DOD:S look and feel while at the same time adding a lot more eye-candy and perhaps even a bit more realism. Hi-res textures, hi-poly custom models, skins that do not look similar to the defaults, bumpmaps for often-repeated map textures and models, class based player models - these things have been left out of the main installation file intentionally. Not much else to say I guess. I know some aren't going to agree with the HUD choice; luckily there's a ton more for ya at dodbits.com . For those not already familar with this pack, it replaces both player model, all weapon models, most HUD items and even quite a few sounds. I should also mention that in the main installation you can choose what items you want to install and what you want to leave out.

A very large thank you to those skinners, modelers and coders who allowed their content to used/abused in this package.

*EDIT*
Awww crap! I can't believe I did this..... In the busywork of trying to get this out I missed something in the credits..... so I'll just post it here:
A very large tip of the hat to Mr. theozzmancometh for hosting all this stuff!! :D

Will post mirrors as they become available

Taken from the readme:
Much thanks goes to the DOD development team - I know they have not abandoned DOD. They have been given other assignments which keep them busy, and will return to DOD with new content when they are able. But until the time that update comes, I bring you this collection to use in it's place.

Apparently 1 file in the "alternate" hi-res install (specifically, the K98 normal map) was somehow corrupted after zipping up the install itself. It's being corrected. the file may appear non-downloadable for a short while tonight as it takes close to 30 minutes for me to upload the corrected version. Link will remain exactly the same after the upload is done

*edit* 25 min and counting... should be good by half-hour from the time of this post.........

Awesome work there - used many of your custom skins before and never been disappointed with them! And the sounds!!

All we need now is for these to be accepted by CAL (or adopted by Valve)

Excellent pack, much appreciated!

The sounds are so-so, the only ones I really like are both smg's, both sniper's, the Carbine and the C96. The rifle reload sounds are also superb. And I really dig the secret_bonus song;)

Wile E Coyote
03-30-2007, 07:11 AM
Could just be me but the Scoped Lar 98 World Model goes all chrome. Why?I just checked the files - I have no idea why - everything is correct. Has anyone else had this?

If your model is all chrome it is usually a sign that the VMT file is specifying a specular channel (alpha channel) that is not there. My best guess would be that you had a previous install of a custom skin that used a different alpha channel, and somehow you are still using that VMT file.

Can you post the contents of your k98_scoped.vmt file (use notepad to open)?

http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?t=71061&page=2

Your thread for the release of your new scoped '98 a while back explains the problem. It was a leftover .vtm file from your previous scoped '98 causing the problem. Delete that file from the "w" folder, viola, all better, many smiles.

Wile E Coyote
03-30-2007, 08:00 AM
LOL I totally glossed over where he said "world" model. Thought he was talking about the v_model.

Yeah that would definitely be the problem. The previous scoped K98 w_model skin was just a test really, which will be dissapearing from my website as soon as I have time to update everything.

Thank god we did that installer when we did Wile... I had a huge problem...lost nearly 50 gig of files on a faulty backup :)

Retrieved all but a few old dod 1.3 files... now I can reinstall steam and play with this pack, I only got a couple of hours playing it then, poof... hard disk gone. From what I saw it was fairly FPS friendly.

God I hate data loss!

WOW.

I still prefer my setup with about 200GB of info spread over 6 hardrives in 2 computers. Even If I lose 1 HD I don't lose everything. Hope it wasn't too catastrophic to your work (professional OR hobby)

So is this a sign that it was a pre-written fate to assemble this pack? :D :D :D

Will you make a 2048X2048 res pack?

There are high-res versions of nearly everything in the pack out there already.

You really don't notice a difference in the high res versions anyway, except on player models and rifles.

That's the only things I use 2048x2048 on. High res on everything is overkill in my opinion.

Here's the high res version of the BAR:
http://www.fpsbanana.com/skins/14069

It's the wartorn one.

High res of the M1 Carbine:

Also there's a lack of consistency between menu pictures and the new player textures.

And to give the bestiest feedback possible, I tried to see if such a stuff could be videomaking-proof.

It's why I've done a little video, juste for my personal pleasure and maybe yours ;). I used the smooth to have great movements. Sry the size, 45 mo / 1.15, sry framerate 60 and sry some lags (~1/2), but the aim wasn't there. :]

Second link worked for me, didn't try the first.

C h A m O, Wow you have a good computer. I couldn't create anything NEAR that solid looking in the frame rate department. I also liked very much the smoothness of the camera pan and tilt control - I would have liked to have done that in the preview I made. Here is a tip though - most codec actually INCREASE the hue saturation during compression; I have no idea why. But it is a wise idea to de-saturate the hue a bit on your movie clips before the compression to compensate.

And I have a bit of a confession (to some)... I Trance is one of the types of music I listen to (calms my nerves and keeps me from shooting everyone) and I was wondering if you PM me with the artist and name of that music.

With me the installer says: It seems that you donīt have steam installed.

It should say... "It seems like you don't have Steam Installed. Do you want to install anyway?"

...and then let you install anyway by browsing to the folder yourself.

The installer looks through your registry.... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam "ModInstallPath" and finds your steamapps folder, changes the found address around a bit and completes the long address needed to get to the dod folder.

Everyones address is different, that's why a registry search is required, if something is not quite right in your registry it won't find the address....but it still should let you do it manually.

It is not letting you do a manual install?

As far as the sprties go, they are very good additions and are on my list of things to do (add them to my website) but considering the download size of the entire thing it would hardly warrant a new release. To be blunt - There will need to be a major game content change to require a new release. It only makes sense.

Well, I'm sure it's not as simple as just resizing them to 1024x1024...I'm sure you have to tweak stuff hear and there.Actually to be honest it really is that simple. For both the standard skin and the normal map. You may want to slightly sharpen the picture a bit, but it is really not necessary. You will not notice it in-game unless extremely close-up. When I have more time I will be doing that for most of the player skins but for now you can do it yourself with VTFEdit (I think). Someone correct me if I amd wrong about VTFEdit being able to re-size

Those are Felix's V2 flags ported to DoD:S by Rabid Whale. I think Wile touched them up a bit as far as the colors though.

Felix's flags still look great in DoD:S in my opinion...you won't find better flags except maybe INsane's. They're the same size as Felix's...the style is a bit different though.

Wile E Coyote
06-07-2007, 07:47 PM
You must be used to way the default sounds handle it (heavy muting of high frequencies) because in reality - decibel wise - they aren't really any louder than the defaults for most weapons.

anyway the easy fix for you would be to download Doc Orange's most recent soundpack found in the "sound" forum. It's the same sounds but with different distance effects.

Or Dillinger's DoDS flags. There's a version 1 and 2 out there on these forums, but I unfortunately can't find them.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those.:o

Just to let you know, Wile E Coyote, [UE-AF] clan has decided to make a movie ("Das Ardennenoffensive" - Kalt) and they will use your skins for it, is that alright with you?
I will put it in the credits ofcourse !

The accurate German spelling is "Die Ardennenoffensive". :)

Hey guys --> I have a question regarding the Visual Upgrade, specifically regarding the splash screen. The splash screen included with the pack is works well with the new theme music but the trouble is that it only is displayed in [4:3] aspect ratios whereas my native ratio is [16:10] so the splash screen with the garand will revert to the default one. Any help resolving this issue will be appreciate.

Also, I apologize if this issue has already been discussed in this forum but after 2 days of using the search function, I couldn't find anything relevant. It would also be nice if Wile could put some kind of faq on his website.

BTW: the whole DOD customization community has done some very excellent work --> kudos all.

Well, the one in the pack is the same size as the default one which is 1024x1024. You'll either have to use the default one or use a custom one that is 2048x2048, which should work.

There are few out there on other sites.

Thanks for your help Guyver, I did find a simple way to prevent DOD:s from reverting to the default splash screen. I just needed to add "_widescreen" to the background01 files --> all it did was stretch the image but that was all I needed.

that's really odd because I tested it on widescreen settings and it automatically stretched it for me.

really nice work dude : ) the only thing i have to say is, that the flags for instance the American, is a little unrealistic, because its the flag of the USA nowadays (i know it was your purpose^^) why dont you take real ones of the WW2?

is there a new version/an update coming in the next time?

and in general: is a blood/violence patch available for dodS something where the soldiers were slashed after a grenade detonates in front of em? or where you can see more blood, or the bullet holes are more obvious?

dont worry, i dont have any mental disorders ^^ but WW2 is a serious scenario and in my opinion these realistic facts must be included in such a game.

You need to look at some U.S. history books. The U.S. flag in the pack is accurate to the time period during WWII. It has 48 stars.

The current (as in right now, 2007) has 50 stars.

I've skinned about everything I can think of for DOD:S. Until they come out with a major update, or a brand-new game, I'm running on stand-by.

unfortunately it is true, thats why he released his PSD's so other people could carry on his work

Last I heard he was just working less on his textures because he's expecting a baby. I don't think he "retired", just that life has other priorities right now.

Hello, Im new to the Fourms here. I wanted to say I think you did an excellant job Wile along with your team. I have the DoD:SVU but I have one problem. The player models are fine but the weapon models are kind of messed up. It has white textures on them like it doesn't like the texture. I figured this might be a resolution problem since my screen is a 1440x900 Widescreen and the max resolution for these models is 2048x2048. But I could be wrong. Is there a way I can fix this? If you need some screenshots I'll post some.

Sorry if this issue has been posted already.

Ok Here are some screenies:

These are just a few ScreenShots. Almost all of the weapons have this white texture somwhere except for German grenades and spade and the American knife and frag greanade.

Hehe. No I haven't given up working on this game.

I have a new job which is kicking my butt. I am working from 7 AM in the morning to anywhere from 7 PM to 1130 PM at night. Mon - Sat. Sunday is my only day off. This is the first time I've even logged on in 2 weeks.

I will try and release the German PSD before I go to bed.

As for the fellow with the problem of the white areas on the weapon..... that is a vidcard problem associated with a few certain types of vidcards. There is nothing I can do about it. Just use the textures without the normal maps or phong shaders and you will be fine.

Ok. I knew it didn't have anything to do with the textures since my friend has this pack with no issues. I just wanted to know what might be causing it. I added the no phong versions of the weapons and it all works fine now. - Thanks

Well it's been almost a year since I released the DODSVU (day of defeat visual upgrade) and aside from hands-down garnering the most pageviews of any topic in the models section of the official DOD forum (http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=40&page=1&pp=25&sort=views&order=desc&daysprune=-1) quite honestly the best experience I've gotten from the whole ordeal is the response from players like you. Every now and then somebody stops and takes a few seconds in a game to tell me how much they liked the install (or at least parts of it). To be honest, I originally set out making skins that I liked, and eventually it snowballed into a collection of works from many talented people in one big install. Nowadays I have little time to skin, heck play games for that matter, but I'm glad that people are still discovering and using the DODSVU. So since I am usually distracted in-game, let me just say to all of those who have thanked me in-game, you are most certainly welcome, and thank you for the compliment.

And as always, thanks to those who lent their work, talents and bandwidth to this pack as well.

BTW, my favorite weapon skin is the MP40..... absolutely the best job I did. It is 100% life-like looking.

No worries mate. there has been comments made in-game here in Australia about the pack, then when I told them I created the Carbine skin they dont beleive me :P
You did well with this pack.
I know what it is like having no time to do stuff anymore...The last time I even came on these boards was back in October or something like that.

Ok so this is my first week playing DOD:S and I want to install the visualy upgrade. I have steam, linux, and a couple game installed on 1HDD and everything else on the other HDD. I tried to install this pack and it told me i didn't have steam installed would I like to continue anyway? Well I did ahve steam installed so i tried moving the installer pack to the same HDD as steam was in...same problem. Is there anyway to fix this and if not what directory do I install this in to get it to work properly?

Wile E Coyote
01-24-2008, 01:47 AM
Yes there is a way
just point the installer to a "dummy" directory, location doesn't matter. Name it whatever you want - fuzzy bunnies for all I care - and install to that. Then MANUALLY move the files over into the DOD:S directory. If you do not know what directories to move to, here is the complete list

Question. Sorry if this has been asked before, but I read through the topic and couldn't find it. How would all of this custom content interact with a "pure" server. It's my understanding that servers set to be pure don't allow any custom content.

My new computer is actually going to allow this custom content to actually be a visual upgrade because I don't have to have all my graphics settings on low.

But on the other hand I plan on playing in the Victory in Europe tournament and I'm pretty sure they use pure servers.

So if I were to install this pack and then join a pure server, would it not allow me to join, meaning I'd have to uninstall the pack first? Or would it just "force" me to use default everything, and then when I joined a non-pure server it would go back to normal. If it does force me to use the default stuff, but does allow me to join without uninstalling custom content, will it give me any weird errors, like pink checkerboards on the skins?

Guyver
01-24-2008, 03:46 PM
You can join any server, pure servers only block custom content while you're on said server. Once you disconnect from a pure server and join another server that's not pure, you will be able to see the custom content.

You do not have to remove it.

OK thanks but...i don't have those directories...i don't' understand why, logically I don't have the necessary files to run the game...but i do and got it from STEAM so i know its legit...for example i go to D:\games\steam\steamapps\*steamusername*\day of defeat source\dod\materials\
in this i have a models folder...this contains germans and americans each having 2 files...this isn't what everyone else describes...and i DO have hidden folders turned on

Guyver

Just create the folders if you don't have them.

Thanks. Just installed the pack. Pretty cool. Must admit the sounds will take some getting used to, however.
