Map Idea: Omaha Beach

How about an Omaha Beach landing.

Allies Objectives:
1. Make it out of the sand dunes, detonate bangalore mines to reach inner perimeter.
2. Knock out pill boxes for 2nd and 3rd objectives.

Replenishing ammo, grenades, rockets only on beach for Allies
Replenishing ammo, grenades, rockets behind Axis pillboxes

Axis Objectives:
Stop Allies from destroying 3 objectives in a specified amount of time.

Perhaps this idea has been brought up before or maybe even a map has been completed I don't know. If I were to make a map this is what I would do. I'd rather give it to someone much more skilled in mapping than I am to give Omaha the quality it deserves.

It was the codename for a beach during the invasion of Normandy.

Here is a picture of Omaha during D-Day. Remember this is only one of 5 beach heads in the invasion.

Here are the historical landing points for each company.

There were Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches designated for the massive invasion. Here's a link from the army website that describes the tactile challenges involved with each beach.

I know there is at least 3 or 4 what I would consider "cheesy" versions actually called dod_omaha. Try using game monitor to find a server and see if those fit your fancy.

I'm pretty sure that Neutrino was just being sarcastic and that he actually knows what Omaha is.

Don't know why I'd never seen strand before. That looks about exactly what I was hoping for. Maybe not with the same exact ideas but pretty darn close. Is there a final version of it (non rc1)?

I believe rc 1 is the latest version, that most servers play.

TheSurgeon is correct, rc1 is the newest, though i'm thinking about wrapping things up and making a final sometime soon, since there aren't too many tweaks to be made.

Obscure ww2 moment? It's hardly obscure. It's the most important moment of the entire war. It's also not the first time it's been done in a ww2 game. It's been done many times. Though I think dod_strand is about the best representation I've seen in a game.

Important yes. Most important I'd beg to differ. For one, I'd rank Stalingrad a notch or two higher than Omaha Beach. As well, the Battle of Moscow involved almost 7 million participants and saw the first significant defeat of the Wehrmacht and also tops Omaha in my books. I'm sure the members of this forum could come up with a few more moments of equal, if not greater, significance than Omaha (Battle of the Atlantic, Battle of Britain, Midway etc etc).

And you need to get your sarcasm detector checked. I think the batteries in it might be dead :)

Ok fine, DON'T make a D-Day map. This was DoD:S only chance to get a map set in Normandy.

Well I figured you were being sarcastic. Had to throw it in there anyway. I'm still baffled how the russians were able to protect stalingrad. Germans should have won that. You might be right. Without Russia it would have only been a hop, skip, and jump onto American soil. However without the atlantic secured and Britian gone it would have been USA and a huge Germany left. I'm glad things went the way they did. Bad nazi's, bad dog.

I've been reading this over the past couple of weeks: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stalingrad-Antony-Beevor/dp/0140249850/ref=pd_ka_1/203-7145006-2462369?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173947350&sr=8-1 as research for the stalingrad map i'mworking on. Well recommended read to anyone with WW2 interest who wants to know about stalingrad.
