if i place fog on the level to restrict vision a little. can people get around it, by using low dx cards etc?

As far as I know everyone can disable the fog in the 3d skybox. That's a question that was asked to me regarding dod_rive. Seen as there is no 3d Skybox in that map, the answer would seem to be no.

ok so if there is fog in the sky box you can tur nit off, but in the map itself you cant disable it...
i guess thats what you are saying.
now dod_colmar has distance fog on it, i had a friend with a better gfx card stand next to me and look down the map, he could see further than i could.
is that true of any fog use in a map..
i was thinking of using fog on a forrest map so i could have lots of trees with short view range on them (to save fps)...and then mask them vanishing with fog.
just dont want players to be able to see further than others

You can not disable the cvar fog_enable without cheat. So every one should see the fog.
But it might be different from one DX to another DX level.
So you could try creating a simple map with your fog settings, place some simple boxes farther and farther away.
Compile it.
And then try the map with different -dxlevel and take some screenshots for comparison.
I would guess that the fog would not look exatcly the same with different DX levels, but I might be wrong.

yep gd idea. ill try that, just forrest maps kill fps so hiding it in fog should help....
do bullets still impact the invisible objects in the same way??

On ludendorff I have seen impact beyond the fog far z-clip, while I was running around with a bazooka. So ... Yes :-D
