dod_rive_rc1 released !
Furyo
01-07-2007, 03:12 PM
Finally!
Dod_rive is far enough in development that I can take her out for a walk, at rc1 status. This map features CTF gameplay in a village in the Marne region, stretched along a river.
The atmosphere is tense and gritty, as both factions engage in battle for the control of this key village on the road to Germany. Prepare yourself for very intense fights inside the vllage, and watch out for sharpshooters along the river. You won't be safe.
Screenshot gallery, thanks to CoolHandLuke:

EDit: Download links removed, please see RC2 thread
Big thanks to CoolHandLuke, Fuzzdad, JakeParlay, Kominaaa, Shane, skdr, Waldo, dod-federation.com, 907th.com
The map isn't finished, and may require some bug fixing. Please send any constructive feedback to Furyo@907th.com or in this thread

Screens look fantastic. Downloading the map now :)
Screens look great - is the fog part of the 3dskybox?
Furyo
01-08-2007, 01:42 AM
There is no 3D skybox at all, just the playable area and non accessible ones. The way the fog is done (special setting in the skybox VMT), adding a 3D skybox makes glitches appear, with fog more dense along the edges of the skybox brushes.
The house models on the terrain bordering the playable zone are scaled up versions of the 3d skybox models everyone knows.
Thanks Furyo - check your inbox, please.
As always, nice work!

Thx, I thought I had changed that in the soundscapes but I guess not.....

the 2nd and 4th flag icons were purple checkerboards for me.
Played this on the 907th server yesterday, it was a lot of fun! No FPS problems at all on my end. scenery was great!

That's weird as they are in the bsp and I checked them ingame myself (making a compile requiring only 1 guy per flag) Here is a zip containing the files:

ive had that icon problem on other maps, and simply reloading the map fixed it.
I like the new river bank/edge. rive keeps lookin better.
I had a ran thru..
pretty nice map, two strange things i founds, shadows are a bit blue.
And the water looks unatural blue too.

I made a res file to force the download of the icons and stuff. The only thing that does not download is the mapDesc file.
Pop it on your server in the map directory and the next time the map runs, it will auto download all the files except the mapDesc file to clients even if they already have the map but not if they already have the files.
I added the missing sound files to so you will keep trying to dl them until he zips them up and posts them.

Actually those files aren't really missing, they're in the HL2 gcf file. I won't add them in at the expense of download times, but if they're small enough I'll consider it. Given it's about 17 different bird sounds, I think you wouldn't notice whether they were here or not, as there still are those in dods gcf.

playing offline by myself, i didnt notice that the 2nd and 4th icons didnt work, hehe.
The map is looking pretty good. I just question if the custom models, like the car are worth the filesize.
personally, i liked that 2nd allied flag with the knocked down tree a lot better before the car was on top of it.

Yep I'm with you there, the car was an attempt at illustrating something unique about this flag so I could make a custom icon....

maybe you could just make an icon of a knocked down tree or something.
or if youre going to use that car, maybe you could throw it in the map somewhere else right side up. If youre gonna have it for download anyways, you might as well exploit it and be able to see it good.
I also realized that the car probably wouldnt be able to get to where it is because theres is only a super narrow road, and a small rickety bridge that most likely wouldnt support the cars weight.

Well the general idea was that the car was upside down because of the tree going down on that bridge, but hey who am I kidding....
I'll get rid of it. Right now I'm looking at ways to make my animated bumpmap stand out more in the water (with the water still being fake)

Played the other night on a server, Cool map. I Like the buildings.
My only suggestion would be to add some more sounds, it was very quiet. I could only hear the distant battle sound (barely). Maybe some more sounds around the water like frogs, insects. I made a custom looping insect sound for dod_pier, your welcome to use it.
P.S - Add some clipping on the bridge roof. It is possible for people to get up there.

yeah there's a big clip pass I need to do, I was shown screenies that were hilarious :)
Sounds would be nice indeed. I take it New_b that you mean ambient_generic entities as opposed to soundscapes, right?

Very nice layout I like how the center section by the river divides the map forcing a break through to happen. Very immersive look, and feel. I like the architecture it is not the usual look to the buildings very original. :)

neat map. it grows on you. in general I am not a fan of foggy maps. if you could tone it down a smidge could be great. complex architecture and neat environments. weird though that there is fog INSIDE the buildings.
Furyo

Tell me about it :) the way fog is made, it's applied everywhere...Shame Valve had to put it that way. I think you're refering to the church ?

yeah thats where it is most evident. very cool map though.
I am also missing the icons for the 2nd and 4th cap site. not sure if thats something in my settings or with the map.

Must be some error with Pakrat, you're not the first to report this, yet the textures are indeed in the bsp, and others don't experience that problem.
Only 2nd and 4th flag use custom icons, 3rd is stock. I'll just include the icons in the next release without embedding them in the bsp file, that'll solve everything. They're meant to be made public anyway

When can we expect the next release?
Furyo

Sometime soon :) No honestly I'm not pleased with the level of detail yet, nor the visual quality of the map, so I gotta work more on that front (color correction, etc)
The reason I released the map was that the changes I'm gonna make aren't going to impact the gameplay, and I needed to see how it worked for everyone before going full throttle with a proper release. By proper, I mean, proper advertizing.

Furyo, we tried Rive this evening, very nice ambience and cool architecture. I like the openness of the mid area, with cover to dash and dive to.
I know it's a known issue but FWIW I also was missing obj icons and the river texture was messed up.
Looking forward to the next release!
Furyo

Thx for that, both issues have been fixed already. I've also redone the entire soundscapes, adding a lot more sounds to the mix (rats in the wheelmill, flies in the river, critter etc).
I'll work on putting a lot more detail in the map next, and release it some time next week.
