Wile's Allied Redux skins

First let me say, yes, there is another skin coming, in the version of a ranger wearing an M1943 uniform. However I am so busy right now that will take some time. So I'm releasing this one right now so y'all have something to put up against your new axis skins.
Sorry that there are only the 2048 versions, I know some cards cannot handle those texture sizes, or even phong shaders for that matter. However it is too much work at the moment to re-produce these things in 1024. And no, it is NOT just as easy as reducing them by %50.
Here is a link to the REALLY pretty pictures, had to put them in another thread
http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69717
So here is my latest creation, in 2 flavors. As with the axis release...

Things I changed:
much, MUCH improved bump maps
added phong shaders
new face
added weathering
re-colored the entire uniform (had too much green tint)
A couple more examples
AS ALWAYS, THANK YOU OZ FOR THE HOSTING!

That is fantastic work! Will the new phong shaders conflict with server consistency? And I can't wait for the one with the M1943 uniform.

Wow, I been waiting to add a allied skin to go with that axis skin, great work. I been looking int my dod folder and noticed somehing. I would say that 90% of my custom stuff is made by you or redone by you Wille. I use all your weapons and sounds and now Skins again. Thank you for all your hard workand giving us the DOD community some great content.

Absolutely fantastic work, as always Wile E. You have my thanks for adding beauty to the game once more.
I just started playing DoD again, haven't played really since beta. I do not have source. Can these work in whatever DoD I have that isnt source. I have no idea what it is, was it 3.1 last ? :) Im such a noob. These are great models though.

And wow Wile E. These should be the default models :O

Thanks all for the kind words.
I was experimenting with 1024x1024 versions today, of course it didn't exactly go smooth. The axis scrunched down just fine, but of course there *HAD* to be an issue with the allies. Phong shader did really weird things. Mainly go fullbright when it should have just been reflecting a little. I'll have another go at it again tommorrow
Funny thing is, I don't notice any performance boost using the smaller textures.
Specs are
2.3ghz AMD
1024 RAM
7600gs (AGP)

The current and latest version of regular DoD is 1.3..Wile E. did do some player and weapon stuff for 1.3, but I can't find them now.

BUT.... before looking at the page, keep in mind this was back before game copyright was the big issue it is nowadays. Most of those conversions wre done by request and actually posted in these forums ;) That and the fact that the credits are all screwed up - over time I lost the list of who did what and I have no idea anymore. The pack is huge because sleeve skins were not separate from the weapon models. This was one change us skinners really appreciated with the switch to Source.
nice job wile :D
downloading :)

To be honest I found the class-specific models to be a horrible drain on most systems. Add to that a separate skin / bumpmap / shader x (up to) 12 and you have a pack that only the most stalwart of systems can handle with ease on the current version of the Source engine.
Also at issue is whether or not there are any model changes coming up. We passed the one year anniversary of DOD:S - if they want to keep it alive and fresh they might be considering updating some stuff. Last thing any skinner / modeller / coder wants is to sink a ton of time into something that will be rendered obsolete.
Then there is the issue of work load. There are many things I was unhappy with on both my allied and axis packs, I had to take a lot of shortcuts just to get the darn thing done, and that was WITH someone I recruited (Rascal) helping me out. Without Rascal doing 6 of the 12 faces seen in those packs, it would have probably died a slow death and never have gotten out the door. To "redux" both those packs would take a LOT of time, a luxury I don't have at the moment.
Now, after having said all that, I have also given much thought to ways to optimize the whole thing. First and formost would be to have all the different models use the same, generic, bumpmap and shaders. That way only one would be loaded into memory each for axis and for allies.
We'll see.

Wyle E, your skins are amazing, but they don't work on my PC.
I've used the installer... but when I play DODS I've always your older
skins.
I don't know why....
Can you explain the installation process ??
Please

I'm betting that DOD was not the last HL2-based game you played before you tried to install it.

Day of defeat is the only Half-life2 base game I play...
Maybe, I've to replace the oringal skins before installing the new ones,
but the problem is that I can find them.
Where can I download the original Allied and Axis skins...
Thanks

as you said before you have wile's older skins installed.
are you sure that you really have deleted ALL the
files belonging to that older skin-pack?

I bet you got the install paths wrong.
Wile E Coyote
11-27-2006, 02:10 PM
quite literally, it installs exactly the same as all the other installers do. The only difference is this one adds another folder called "wile" and puts the skins in there. This is done because I was getting e-mails from people who completely ignored the installation warning "backup your current files" and ended up overwriting some skins they didn't want to.
It also includes 2 VMT files which are very critical because they contain the new path of the skins' loctation. The default VMT's will not work with these skins (in the past they would)
As ironic as this is going to sound, this has actually been a very good thing for me. I've gone from 40+ "technical difficulty" e-mail/PM's to about 10 when I switched to the EXE versions, now I've gone from 10+ to 3 when I used new folders.

These aren't working for me for some reason. The vmts are where they should be in .../player/american, and the vtfs in .../american/wile, but ingame I'm getting pink and black squares. I've checked all the paths in the vmts and they lead to the right place, but they're just not showing up ingame. I'm also using the Axis skins that use the same folder layout and they've always worked fine.

I had some other skins installed with different ones for each class, I didn't think of checking the models since they're just exactly the same as the default ones but with the texture settings changed, these ones are working fine though now I've deleted the models.
