Anyone going for more remakes of classic maps?

I've noticed NC17's recent work with dod_hill and I love it. One of my favorite maps ever! I just hope more people will get into the whole thing. Personally, I would love to see dod_valley, dod_mainz, dod_vn61, dod_bliss, dod_sicily, dod_dam, dod_oslo and dod_snowtown. Just to name a few. However though, I doubt many servers would host these maps. Most of the servers I have seen just use the normal maps that come with 1.0 and that has been the case with every DoD release. I figure that since these maps were placed in the original betas, that they could be released in official DoD mappacks by the DoD team? That way servers might be more obliged to install them. Just my two cents.

Yes, but some of these maps were good and fun. Many people played them. Snowtown was very popular and Hill was everyone's favorite sniper fest. I don't see how some of these maps were bad....

Also, I love having a large selection of maps. Thats just me personally. I imagine though that many map authors would love to have their map included again. But I also said they could be released in mappacks included on the main DoD site here. They wouldn't have to come with Dod 1.0. If they were mappacks on the site then more servers would likely download them and add them to the lineup.

I like Mozart but not Nelly, seriously though Indy, start mapping you can do the remakes. Its pretty boring to try to copy someones map and make it look better/improve gameplay/etc, it much more fun to create your own map. Also some of the mappers are still around so if they want to remake them they can.

Actually quite a few maps will work with 1.0, even 1.3 ones if you just download the old version and transfer some files carefully. For the most part, remaking an old map isn't the best idea. NC17 got away with it for hill since helvan dissapeared and there's no other version of it, but most other maps don't necessarily need remakes, either their creators are still around, or they've been remade. Kalt supposedly is supposed to be like a 1.0 snowtown, valley2 is apparently in the making by the original author, caen already is 1.0 official, seg4 is under construction... etc.

Ok, I don't understand the comparison with songs, but if you are tired of the map you don't have to play it. ;) Some people might enjoy these maps, especially the new retail people who have never seen them! While some of us have played since 1.0 Beta, I think the people who came in afterward should try some of these maps. However, I had no clue as to whether which author was recreating which map or not. I just wanted to see if people were supportive of the past history of DoD. I'm all for map remakes, seeing as how I'm a history major and all, I generally tend to cling on to the past. As you would say out with the new and in with the old - let that not be the case. There are many servers that do map votes and I'm sure that the old maps would not always dominate. Let there be many excellent new maps as well!

As to getting older maps to work with the new versions of DoD -
I have had the hardest time getting the oldest ones to work due to missing .wad files. I imagine that much has changed in the textures and code, so some of these maps are now unplayable without the wad file. I've looked for that file but no luck. As well, if I installed that file, I'm scared that I would mess up DoD 1.0! :D

The song comparison is way off. Remakes & covers of songs have always been and always will be a common supported practice.

Did anyone criticize Johnny Cash for his version of hurt? No, I don't think so.

Oh and..

Metallica Icon was on just a couple of weeks ago, in which several different bands did classic metallica songs live at the festivities. They were also supported for their efforts. :)

i would really like a proper remake of oslo. My favourite 1.3 map, but all the new versions are a poor effort and too over teh top ( 6 flags?!!? wtf! ). It was a simple map and the upgraded versions with extra routes and stuff never really worked. no offence Artacus ( soz spelling )

Oslo had a killer layout, and i had some great wars on the map. An update / remake of the 1.3 version would be great. All you need is some new textures, and some sandbags.

My favorite music is rarely played on the radio...my favorite maps are rarely played on pub servers. Consequently, before I started my site, it was almost impossible to find a good variety of custom maps. Thus, I addressed a need and opened my site.

We try to host everything we can, reserving our personal judgment in favor of community interest when and where it makes sense. So...my point is...just like my huge CD collection...so is our map collection. Some people ultimately get sick of stock maps (there can only be one dod_jagd after all), so a little variety never hurts anything. Thus, for those who like large collections...feel free to browse. Take what you want...play what you like...but at the very least...recognize it all has a place.

On a personal note...I've already become tired of the stock maps and find myself alternating between dod_flugplatz, dod_bierville, and now dod_stadtpark. I think those are the top 3 custom offerings right now. Okay...I still love dod_jagd...and yes...I will jump on a server if I see it's active...even if that means playing with 12 year olds "pwning people".

BTW...three initials to tip you off as to my musical taste...S.R.V.

Well I feel there should be more remakes of old classic maps, its going back to your roots sort of, it gives people the feeling that there back in beta 1 days...

besides dod_hill_classic was remade and done very well....
so why not do more??

everyone loves to play what got them started.

and as for servers hosting them, I know a place that would host a server with just the classic remade maps in its cycle... for the fans..

SO MAKE MORE CLASSIC MAPS!!!!!

:D

Not really. I had plenty of fun playing covers with my band. Just because it's not quite as entertaining doesn't mean it shouldn't happen.

The maps/songs thing is irrelevant. Some people love some of the old maps, so why not keep using them? If you are so adamant about them being forgotten, don't download them. That's all there is to it.

I think it'd be fun to have Maniz, Dam, and couple of others back. Just because a map is no longer official doesn't make it bad, look at Dog1, it was a popular map and was really great, it was removed because the team tightenened the system requirements for maps. And the comparison to music doesn't apply, for one thing, they're two different forms of media, and for another, cover songs are done quite a lot, in fact it's how a lot of new bands get started and learn. Even if it did apply, then it'd help new mappers learn how to map and how to make good maps.

You do not make maps for credit or popularity you make them to entertain your self and others

Usually when a popular map is removed from dod it is because of new quotas or the author is not able to update their map in time for a new release

Man, whatever u do. stop relating them to songs... you DONT get radio stations playing the same 7 or 8 songs every 5 hours do ya.. and when u play the map, it "changes" in the way that the axis might be winning, then allies start owning. a song is a song and doesnt change while its playing, its the same every time, each time u play a map the experiance changes.

heres another example

there aplenty of dust/dust2 only servers in CS, and ppl like playing maps over again

A radio station would be crap if it played the same song over again 24/7

Maps and Songs are totally different.. STOP relating them.

On the actual note of the thread, i dont mind map remakes, what i dont understand is that y did they take them out in the first place.. there are much better maps then anzio and caen, but its cos of the popularity... still, i like the current official maps :)
