[REL] dod_venteux_final

I have decided this is to be the final release of the level.

beta 2 was tested behind closed doors and the niggles of beta 1 have been laid to rest.

Set in a rural French town, on a blustery/windy storm day. The name is "venteux" which is "windy" in French (classy) I got Ideas from the Band of Brothers series "Carentan" episode where you see the allied soldiers running up the dirt track and and down into the town, I'm sure you'll see the inspiration in some of the pictures.

The map has five flags, three one man and two, two man flags. axis and allies get one, one man flag on round start. the 2 man flags are the tank in a similar setup to dod_donner and the ruins, the flags in the shell of a bombed out hotel/large townhouse. the middle flag is the destroyed jeep which is overlooked from many locations but only takes 1 man, 3 seconds to cap. Holding the middle flag will largely depends on retaining one of, if not both the 2 man flags as each provides precious strategic views over the middle flag.

There are quite a few routes but I don't think it's a maze and It's not massive. Even small games can be fun but I recommend 20+ players. The max is 48!


+ Extended/Improved Allies & Axis Spawn Protection.
+ Added New Spawn exits
+ Re-positioned Axis 1st flag away from nearest exits.
+ Added Extra routes around Allies 1st flag, now similar to Axis 1st flag.
+ Tweaked HDR Lighting levels, similar lighting to non-HDR.
+ Added a few more sandbags hear and there
+ Numerous visual tweaks

I made use of 2 custom models that I found using this forums map models index, both The surgeons Citroen 7CV and Pedroleum's Destroyed US Jeep.

The custom "Ruins" and "Jeep" icon were by me.

All credits in the .txt file (Inside the BSP)

BSPzipped to 36.6 megs, downloadable in zip format for easy installation.

At the moment the download is at www.yousendit.com, anyone can download from the link at the bottom of the page for up to 7 days but it will need alternate mirrors if anyone would be so kind?

Because I don't want people to get confused.

People recognise the term final as "the last one". It's not a very big distraction.

I do really like this map, looks nice and the layout works quite well but man does it really need some major optimisations.

My fps typically never goes below 50 (even on Anzio with HDR on), some well optimised maps like battlebridge I'm in the 80's all the way, dod version of aztec i get over 110 for most of the map, in this map though I hover around 20 and this does really hold the map back.

Even recompiling without HDR would help as the map doesnt really need HDR

No it would be mine ;) but as I did it all in EntEd the areaportals all remain intact which is where the fps comes from.

One of the best custom maps out there, in my opinion. Balanced, fluid, pretty. Always a pleasure to play.

I have to say I don't have any fps issue with it. Fps is at least on par with the stock maps. Good all around, without any bad spot. I've never seen anyone complain about it in-game either.

so you took the css's aztec, ented'd it, and embedded all the custom content? is it like +50mb now? can i see the map somewhere?
