I used pakrat to zip my mapname.txt into my map, this is the file that goes in the maps folder and has a brief map explanation and read me on the team select screen. Funny thing is it doesn't display, it's just blank. If I leave it loose though it seems to work. Is there a problem with pakrat and this file?

Well, the HL1 version of dod uses a .txt for the mission briefing, dod:s uses a .HTML for it's breifing, you can find a tut on this posted by fuxxdad in these forums with search

.txt do not corrupt if imbeded but .HTML's will, so make sure to embed everything in the bsp cept the .HTML and associated images

Funny thing is I have seen other maps with the briefing which works with no extra files.

Take a look at the text formatting of the readme.txt file I embedded into the dod_flurry bsp.

To extract the readme.txt, use pakrat.

Been a while since I used pakrat but I think I'd be right in saying don't forget that it doesn't automatically sort out the correct directory for some files, including the mapname.txt file, you need to manually set it to dod/maps or whereever it should be if you haven't done so.

I can say that the mapname.txt file shows up in the map description if manually put in using bspzip, and not pakrat.

**edit, I didn't mean pakrat doesn't work.

how to use bspzip:

That's what i followed. Pakrat seems to have problems when it comes to adding txt files. Many times it will add them correctly, but then corrupt a different texture in the bsp.

I used pakrat with no problems.
