Wile's BIG FAT new Axis Redux release

re‧dux [ri-duhks] –adjective

brought back; resurgent: the Victorian era redux.

[Origin: 1650–60; < L: returning (as from war or exile), n. deriv. (with pass. sense) of redūcere to bring back; see reduce]

No fancy graphics. No big hoopla. This is my best job I could do for the axis. Now I give it to you. Go play ;)

I was never really happy with my original axis skins. You see, I was just getting into the high-end model skinning. Before that my reskins were rather easy. By the time I got around to my "Private Joe" allied skins, I was much better at the craft, so they tend to look more polished. I will also be releasing 2 new version of that skin; I originally intended to relase evrything at once, but honestly I need a tiny break to take care of other stuff. Possibly they'll be ready in a week or so. Not as much to correct on those.

Skins are 2048 x 2048. Sorry, no smaller versions at this point. My time is limited.
New spiffy shaders and normal maps. Oooooo.... the shininess!
They are somewhat dirty. Go wild.
Sleeve and hands skins are included, although some are not gonna think they are dirty enough. (to those I say, "get a copy of photoshop")

And an big thanks to Guyver for helping me with testing and such! Also much thanks to Jed, for without his explanations of phong shaders I'd still be testing things out.

IF YOU FIND any installation errors, PM me a quickly as possible so I can fix them. I've tested them, but one always seems to creep through now and then.

some pretty picture I made over in the previews section:
http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69434

I have also released a new version of the weapons soundpack

ON TO THE DOWNLOADS!!!!!

I WILL SAY THIS A SIMPLY AS POSSIBLE - CLICK ON THE PICS TO DOWNLOAD

What I changed:
Aside from adding phong shaders, better bump maps and dirt, old Josuf basically got a facelift. Hair, nose, those God-awful eyes, ears, equipment, boots, etc. (these following pics are without bumpmaps or shaders because the SDK is still broken)

Still looks greats...me wants! Phong + normal maps = sexy. I dunno why Valve didn't do that in the first place.

Wile E Coyote
11-05-2006, 07:35 PM
Well as far as phong goes, it wasn't programmed into the Source engine yet.

Normal maps were fine for single player, but two years ago, trying to make a game that would run on equipment up to four yeas old (6 years ago), they were probably seen as too taxing for large multiplayer games.

Nice work Wile... I wish I had phong... :(.

Speaking of which, you mentioned you had upgraded your rig so that you could see the Phong, Wile. As your old ATI Radeon 9700 pro rig was near-identical to mine, would you mind me asking what you upgraded to?

Mine is a laptop, so were I to upgrade, I'd get a new machine altogether.

7600 gs (AGP)
had to go with AGP as my board is not PCI-X compatible
specifically bought the Chaintech one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=7600gs+agp&Submit=ENE&N=0&Ntk=all&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

There is no relationship to the skin and a historical unit. With the exception of giving them ranks and insignia, I kept them as generic as possible.

ease up guys, looks like altavista babelfish to me :D

The above sentence translated by altavista to German and then back to English:

"if you leave chaps up, look like Alta Vista babelfish to me after"

And I had made a special version of Ranger Joe for the clan "5th Ranger Battalion", he probably has that version somehow.

Wile E Coyote
11-08-2006, 04:30 AM
yes, it is correct. Beyond a doubt. Did you let the installer handle it or did you install to a temp directory and attempt to manually install it?

VMT's go in the german folder, everything else goes in the wile folder, and the skins themselves have non-standard names. EDIT: so it is VERY important to use the VMT's that come with the installation.

Guyver
11-08-2006, 01:14 PM
Yes, the install paths are different from the default paths, Yoshi. If you put them in the default spots..that's what will happen. I made the same mistake while testing. lol :D

I thought I put an explanation in the readme, but apparently I didn't. Updated all readme's with this explanation:

INSTALLATION:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
THIS DOES NOT INSTALL TO THE DEFAULT GAME PATHS. To prevent accidental overwriting of files, this skin installs to a custom directory and uses non-standard names. The only files that are the same as the default are the VMT files, because they have to be. Use the installer! If you just feel like you have to manually install it for some reason, make sure you pay attention and use the "player/german/wile" folder.

Also make sure the last HL2 game you played was "DOD:S". The installer will install to the last HL2 directory used

Jim_Riley
11-14-2006, 04:24 PM
Yeah I figured out the problem, I had model files from a previous skin that seemed to interfere with these skins. So thanks for a, I guess, MORE clearer explanation :D

I'm just wondering, is it possible while having installed the gefreiter josuf skins, to give a class the wired helmet from your other files?
Making them a bit more distinct
I always loved class based skins, using them on the allies, easier to give targets priority

For example, just giving the sniper the wired helmet while the rest keeps the regular helmets

Is that possible without too much adjustments?

These are hands-down AWESOME. Love it, love it, love it. Great work. Same with the Allied ones.

But I really do wish you'd do class-specific skins. I saw in another post someone said it'd take too much memory using 6 2048x2048 textures, I hope that's not why you're not doing it. It's just swapping model pieces, not textures.

Anyway, I say look into it, and I'd love these even more. Absolutely beautiful work man.

To some people 2048x2048 textures are common place, their computers can handle it fine. Another six won't make much of a difference. The problem is for the lower end computers, which probably couldn't handle an extra six 1024x1024 textures, certainly not 2048x2048 ones. But I do agree with you Dillinger. Some more unique skins would be great, but there was also a problem with the phong shaders causing consistency errors - I don't know if anyone has found their way around that yet.

Wile E Coyote

Regarding performance:

With an
2.3ghz AMD CPU
1gb 2700 RAM
ATI 9700 pro

I literally noticed NO DIFFERENCE between a bare-bones install and the addtion of the hi-res skins, with all included shaders. This includes hi-res weapons also. I gained no performance, I lost no performance. It simply made no difference.

Now I have a 7600gs (AGP) and the skins are not even an issue:D basically I found out that either your card can handle 2048 or it can't, and that literally is the only performance factor. If your card is capable (and keep in mind my ATI 9700 pro is 4 years old) then the reality is that it is handling only 2 hi-res textures in memory, one for each team, no matter how many people are on the server. I must emphasize again, I found no decline in performance whatsoever.

This is the main reason I chose to release them only in 2048 x 2048. As you recall previously I had released low-res versions as well, but with the addition of normal maps and phong shaders, the release size for just one hi-skin is 8mb To include a low-res with it is just pushing the file sizes too large. Furthermore, too many releases start to confuse things. I feel confident most machines playing Source can handle the 2048 nowadays, so the 1024's had to go.

With my old PC, I noticed a huge difference in 2048x2048 player textures as opposed to 1024x1024. I had to take it upon myself to downsize most of Wile's skins. I had huge frame rate hits unless I downsized.

Now with my new PC, it's nothing it can't handle, so no problem. But I would still like to see class specific skins, and some custom weapon and player models.

But these are still the best out there. I am quite pleased with them. Though I'd like to see the helmets have that strap on them from another Wile E's pack.

wile I wish the the dev team would make class specific skins a possibility.

Then take some of your skins and make this game magical. what would be nice is if they could make a option where mappers could chose the "type" of models like paras or normal in the past.

but it could be paras, normals, camo....what have you.

this game could look so much better.

Make some nice paras wile I miss the old ones sooooo much.

Wile E Coyote
03-06-2007, 04:33 PM
You can do that with player skins, but the phong won't still work will it? Me, I'd rather have phong.phong will work, you just have to do some manual editing of the VMT files.

FYI the allied ranger skins will work with the allied "redux" normal maps also.

Sorry SuperBoumbo, I'm not making any more player packs like that. However, all the REAL work is already done, and all the things you need to put your own together are already available. As it was already mentioned, all you need is Notepad and a little research into how to properly edit the VMT files to allow different skins for those models contained within to two player packs metioned above.

Guyver
03-06-2007, 04:48 PM
...

I can do it, but the sleeve skins won't match.

That really won't matter anyway since it was the same way in 1.3

EDIT: Ahh I see, Wile. It would look odd anyway since the newer skins are dirtied up while the older ones aren't.

Vi3trice
03-06-2007, 05:30 PM
You can make a different phong map for each skin.
