Hey fellow DODers,

I love you guys for the beautiful and bad A$$ maps you create.

Ok I have been wondering about this for quit some time: Can someone make a huge map, just like Snow Bridge, but with a lot of buildings which you can walk into and set up sniping. I just wish there was a huge map that you could street fight in, snipe, multiple spawn points and just really good door to door fighting.

Can this be done? I have always wanted to ask you guys this.

Problem with a map like that will always be optimisation. That's why our maps are generally made with certain limitations in mind.

All those maps are boring and still to small. I know a lot of players want huge maps and to be able to go into every building.

I'm so desperate for the type of map i'm looking for that I would pay for it. i want something realistic for that time, map that can hold 32 players, and every building you can hide in and snipe. That's all I ask for.

Sorry for venting. I just would really like see a map built to my specs.

The key is hugggeeee and a lot of buildings that you can walk into. A map that is big and has to have multiple spawn points would be nice. I don't know why all us have to think a map has to be a certain size, which is often always small. I don't know if you guys are feeling me.

The biggest problem with what your looking for is OPTIMIZATION. Anyone can make a huge map, with 40 buildings all completely accessible. The problem with that is you will get 3 FPS if your lucky once the firefights start.

Source isnt kosher with wide open spaces right now. Give it some time, with any luck they will release an update that makes such maps more feasible.

Also, making too many buildings is just going to confuse the hell out of players. Maps need to have an objective and a common route to these objectives.

If you want something like that then look at Resistance and Liberation, we're working on massive maps (2-4 times bigger then the dev maps) and while not all buildings are enterable alot more area.

The map I'm working on is a huge outdoor map and has 100% enterable buildings (6 buildings total)

Try dod_campazzo it is a great map by Moroes. It is pretty huge, a lot of ways around, flanking and houses you can go into.
And I think it is going to be released in its final version soon.

As many have pointed out, something really huge WITH lots of buildings will lag horribly.

Two maps that may come close to what you are looking for include dod_grubbenvorst and dod_alps. Both these maps are playing on our Futurama server, and it's in our download section.

Dod_grubbenvorst (http://www.sunlitgames.net/index.php?module=ExDownloads&func=details&fid=396&cid=2) is a fairly large urban map with almost all of the buildings open. It's about as big as you can make an urban map like that and still have good fps. It's great fun. The author is working on some further fixes and optimizations, we'll post the new version as soon as it's out.

Dod_alps (http://www.sunlitgames.net/index.php?module=ExDownloads&func=details&fid=4) is really HUGE in area for a source map. It does have some buildings, but open areas dominate. Lots of terrain features (hills, cliffs, river, etc.) give cover. The author managed to keep the frames pretty reasonable by using a limited number of simple textures and a simple skybox. It still manages to look pretty good.

Kinda offtopic maybe but does anyone know what kinda map sizes will be possible with the ep2 update, or do you think it will be a case of having to cleverly layout maps so that bigger areas can be sectioned off to make huge maps?

I don't think we have a very limited space to make maps, it is fairly huge.

I don't think the overall map grid size for hammer will change much unless they've over hauled it bigtime. They may just make some 'new' kind of optimizing tools or invest in uber lod levels and so on.

IF,...(and it's a big IF) you could make a map that actually used the entire Hammer grid without it playing like a poorly drawn cartoon; IMO, it wouldn't last in rotation as the player would be running all the time to reach the battle area. Even if Advancing Spawn Points were easier to do, on a 20 or 24 slot server, you'd never, or rarely see the enemy team.
It would probably be great for 24 snipers,...but how big is big enough?

I understand about that lag, but somone's got to have the answers to fix it. Dev. Team...Hint...Hint. I have played a game called wwiionline.com or battlegroundeurope.com, the one thing awesome about this is that hundreds of people are on one map. There are a lot of building you can snipe from. Anways, I thought it would be fun to take DOD away from the path of CSS.

I hate when you are just stuck in a street and can't just camp out in a building.

Big to me is Snow Bridge or a little bit bigger. I'm not talking about something that takes 2 hours to reach the end. I'm just losing interest ever since Caen is no more on Source. :(

Lag isnt so much an issue as gameplay

Dod has really arcadey close quarters gameplay and a large map just is not fun unless you do really good advancing spawns in which case it sort of "defeats" the perpose

I saw your website and i'm efin blown away!!! I thinking i'm dreaming and i will wake up to find it was just a dream. These guys are the next generation WWII sim. Beautiful maps. So beautiful that I don't want to playing them; I just want to sit and stare at them.
