[REL] dod_venteux_b1

10-18-2006, 06:29 AM

I might as well just copy my preview post from yesterday so here is is: -

I'd like to introduce myself and my new project "dod_venteux_b1". The level is set in a rural french town, on a blustery/windy storm day. The name is "venteux" which is "windy" in french (classy) I got Ideas from the Band of Brothers series "Carentan" episode where you see the allied soldiers running up the dirt track and and down into the town, I'm sure you'll see the inspiration in some of the pictures.

The map has five flags, three one man and two, two man flags. axis and allies get one, one man flag on round start. the 2 man flags are the tank in a similiar setup to dod_donner and the ruins, the flags in the shell of a bombed out hotel/large townhouse. the middle flag is the destroyed jeep which is overlooked from many locations but only takes 1 man, 3 seconds to cap. Holding the middle flag will largely depends on retaining one of, if not both the 2 man flags as each provides precious strategic views over the middle flag.

There are quite a few routes but I don't think it's a maze and It's not massive so I'm sure even with smaller games it would be fun. I would say the size overall is medium.

The map has 48 spawns for anyone willing for it.

I made use of 2 custom models that I found using this forums map models index, both The surgeons citroen 7CV and Pedroleum's Destroyed US Jeep.

The custom "Ruins" and "Jeep" icon were by me.

BSPzipped to 37.9 megs, downloadable in zip format for easy installation.

At the moment the download is at www.yousendit.com, anyone a can downlaod from the link at the bottom of the page for upto 7 days but it will need alternate mirrors if anyone would be so kind?

I will probably make a better overview map in the "parchment map" style after some public testing.

I hope you enjoy the map.

Please feel free to leave comments/criticism and suggestions for the next release in this thread.

This is the maps first public beta so there will be things to fix!

WOW ! Ran through it this morning. It has a gritty brooding ambience. Its layout reminds me of the classic maps in the fury series, rouen and veghel all wrapped up into one but with Source graphics and sophistication.

Running on SunLit Futurama in mapcycle and can be voted in. It will autodownload or you can get it beforehand from the map gallery (http://www.sunlitgames.net/index.php?module=ExDownloads&func=details&fid=388&cid=2).

Great thanks!

I'm glad you like the ambience, It's actually the default sky as you load Hammer for editing in dod and it just sold me the idea lol.

Excellent map....I just downloaded it and ran around checking it out. Very much enjoyed the layout and the murky sky. The ambiant sound was a great addition.

Two little things. I found the checked floor in the ruined house had a bright shine on two of the sections while one was the right dark non reflective texture.

Secondly and I'll have to actually play on a full server to check this out, the allied spawn and spawn exits seem like they could be camped by a couple of MG's very effectively. One on the other side of the gate and one down the roads and the Allies could be pinned in for a bit. Maybe a sniper window in their spawn house, facing the road?

Just a thought and I really look forward to playing this with some others!

It is a possibility, but I dont' know because its never been tested by more than 1 person running around on their own.

The sniper window is a interesting idea though, maybe in the attic crawl space...

As for the wierd reflection, it may just be the light from the open ceiling of that room reflecting on it? I didn't see anything when I ran around it earlier.

Map looks good. Could use just a few cosmetic things, like maybe some turned over burning vehicles, some concrete blockades, smoldering bombed holes, something to give some cover in the streets.

Will wait for the next release or two, before putting it on my server though. The map has alot of potential. :) Nice work.

the allied spawn and spawn exits seem like they could be camped by a couple of MG's very effectively.

Yes that is the way it played out. Although the actual area between the spawn barricade and main map routes is large, there is only 1 small area from which to leave the spawn.

Other than that, the fps were good. Ambience is old school. Great rubble and building interiors. No one found any sticky spots. Excellent beta !
Thanks for playing with us Aufo

I had a great time playing it on SunLit as well even though the Axis kept getting stomped. (Maybe because the map's creator was playing on the Allies? :D )
I think this map is going to be very popular.
Now if only I can fix my aimbot ;)

Im uploading it to our server now we will take a look tonight looks great thanks !

I had fun playing this late last night. nice mix of open areas and close quarters fun.

great map, we have played it this morning and nobody said something negative about it.

Great map thanks very much Aufo :)

I love the level of detail even in areas that one would not always enter. I enjoy maps like this which keep you on your toes, wondering where the next enemy is hiding or where a shot is coming from. There are so many routes, its more realistic impo than simple 2 route maps which can become spray and pray. This definately allows use of tactics and skills.

Its quite large, so if you run a 20 man server as we do, you really do need a full server to get the most out of putting it on.

Top marks, and great to see another quality mapper about.

just to add my feedback: this map is awesome. that ruined building kinda reminds me of caen. you did a great job, keep it up!

Things I am working on or fixing for the next release include: -

-Improved Axis spawn protection
-Reducing distance from axis spawn to axist 1st flag, comparable to Allies 1st.
-Moved Axis 1st flag a little back and away from closest exits.
-Adding alternate route(s) around Allies 1st flag, comparable to Axist 1st.
-Improving clipping in the Ruins so that it's easier to jump through the gaps near the flag.
-Improved lighting in some dark areas, such as the small room near the Ruins flag heading toward Axis 1st.
-Fixing the wierd German Radio bug.
-Architectural tweak to the area just outside axis spawn.

Nice map. The atmosphere worked out really well and I don't think you should change it at all. The map could use some definition, but that'll come hopefully in future releases.

I noticed how some of your env_lightglow entities have been given an extremely far max distance, so that you get the desired effect of it being super subtle. Looks great from inside, but you've probably noticed that it looks super lame when you see it from further away on the street. I made a thread about this a while ago with a solution... http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67477

The screenshots might be down, but I think you should understand what I'm referring to.

rockets in the ruins for maximum fun.

hey, when can we expect the b2 of this map ?
(good job by the way !)

10-25-2006, 02:30 AM
Nice map!! reminds me of classic dod!!! Which is a great thing. Keep up the great work!!

Hopefully next beta before the weekend. Or at the wekend. No firms dates.

Also, I may want to perform closed testing on the next release prior to its public release to make sure my alternations are worth it/enough to fix the gamepaly issues.
