Hey! I've finally gotten around to finishing dod_salerno. RC3 has been out for quite some time now and I've made some more tweaks and optimizations in this version, hopefully all for the better.
Changelist :
-Redesigned axis spawn, easier to navigate
-Added one additional spawn exit for each team
-Implemented new spawn-protection
-Some changes to inside areas, easier to navigate
-Lower filesize
-New 3d skybox
-Further optimizations
-Added seagulls and tons of ivy!

FI-NAL-LY !!!
I'm glad I bugged you enough times so you'd get off your lazy bum and get on it. Seriously though, this is by far the best custom map since the release of DoDS, and its popularity has not decreased.
Thx for your hard work. I can only hope to make as good a level as this one one day, and that all mappers set their standards at your level.

Why a .exe ?

Except the fact that a lot of the people who download it here are server admins and this makes it infinately more annoying to put on our servers.

Right, usually there is a zip copy as well. Oh well...

Plus the fact that I don't know you and even if you do make maps I don't like downloading any .exe from someone I don't know...

Awesome map - excellent detail - wonderful architecture. And it plays well too. The only complaint I have is that it makes me want to scrap my attempt and start from scratch. Pressing delete is just not as satisfying as wadding paper though. Great job and I can't wait to see your next project.

The .exe is fine....just open it on your desktop, and drag the .bsp to wherever you want it.

Really nice map, but to be honest:
a .exe is a huge pita for some, who wants
to get this map via wget on his linux server in seconds
(because of a 100mbit+ connection) instead of
1) downloading an .exe-file to his desktop
2) unpacking it
3) reuploading it via isdn/xdsl
Something that normally needs about 30 seconds to
install now takes for about half an hour+.
And you call that "user-friendly"? Huh? Really huge pita(!).

I guess it's just user friendly for the people that don't run servers then :)

Yes, this should be ok, but a good server has
"fastdownloadurl" enabled, so no user should really
need to download a map manually.

For linux server admins, .exe map releases are a big pain in the ass...
and I'd guess that a fair percentage of servers run linux, if not the
majority.
Then there's the security problem of .exes - My windows servers run in
a high-security data centre, and there's no way I'm running an untrusted
.exe on them. My client is OS X, so I'm not running them here either.
I think we're all smart enough to figure out where to copy files from a zip.
I understand you guys want to make self-installers for branding purposes,
but if you're interested in having your maps played on more servers, go
with zip.

Clearly someone oblivious to us poor colonials who get hit with packet charges...
I use an RSS feed to keep my clanmates up to date with new maps and maintain a map repository on box.net (the RSS feed is driven off here) with an index page accessible from inside the game via Mani's web shortcuts feature. Its a little bohemian but it does the trick :)

I hear your concerns over downloading .exe files but getting them from established communities, such as SunLit Games (http://www.sunlitgames.net) or the DOD- Federation (http://www.dod-federation.com) is "worry" free.
We provide .exe files per the request of our community. We are pleased to help distribute new maps and to share our bandwidth. Fast download in game is also available for those who do not wish to use our map library (http://www.sunlitgames.net/index.php?name=ExDownloads).
I think we're all smart enough to figure out where to copy files from a zip Actually, "smart" doesn't necessarily come into it. A lot of players don't want to bother thinking about installs. They just want to point and click.
Even if a map is in zip instead of .exe, server operators, (especially linux) still need to open the files and check for case sensitivity and necessary res files before bzipping and uploading.
I'm just happy and grateful for new custom maps.

Bottom line, everyone can provide a zip as well as an exe for their releases. I know I do. Furthermore, aside from a couple file, everyone should pakrat everything into their bsp.

Great urban fighting map!
There is a good reason why this was one of the first custom maps to be featured in CAL.
Good lesson for map makers: make a map that focuses on funneling the action towards the objectives. Didn't Fuzz Dad say that one?

Insta nice work but there are some small problems with a "black invisible wall" :
here
http://panteror.free.fr/mapping/salerno/dod_salerno0002.jpg
http://panteror.free.fr/mapping/salerno/dod_salerno0003.jpg
and double window too !

In either case, the axis have advantage because they can see whereas allied cant.
It's very disappointed for competitive play !

The capping aera of the first flag allies (oceanfront) looks strange. I made a little vidz about that it happens in yesterday pcw :

Providing only Windows executables of the map and not even properly packaging the files in the map definitely isn't making me a happy server admin.
In the future, if you could pack everything into your BSP so that .res file isn't necessary, that would be fantastic. And if you want people to actually use your map, providing it in a format that server admins can actually use would be useful too.
Oh, and here's a zip if anyone wants it: http://dackz.net/sa/dod_salerno.zip

thanks for the .zip file but as you mentioned, .res files and several single files are not useable. is it that difficult just to put everything in a bsp file?
i just downloaded 4 maps, 3 of them with .res files and just one good map with everything in the .bsp file - so just 1 new map on my server instead of 4.

What problems are you having with the res file server side?
If you have the res file list all the extras and you have in game downloads set up properly from an outside server, your client base shouldnt be experiencing any problems.

What problems are you having with the res file server side?
Where is the problem just to make a .bsp file with everything inside? so many mappers create such bsp's and don't need .res files
The problem with res-files is that if you make bz2 fastdownload you have to pack all files to bz2 (or you get download errors)
RosietheRiveter

Hmm, we only bz2 the bsp files and have not had that experience on any of our source servers, be they DODS, CSS, PVKII and HL2DM.
Where is the problem just to make a .bsp file with everything inside I believe there were some technical problems pakratting some sound, overview and html files for specific maps, hence the res files.
