[REL] dod_flak_b3

This is the first public release of this map on the dod forums. The older version were tested on my LAN and some dod servers. I'm finally happy with this verion, it is very stable and optimized. For that reason I am very excited to see it played on a 32 person server. I started this map thinking of the 2nd or 3rd (can't rmember which one) episode of Band Of Brothers. The one where the Allies attack German Flak possitions. They encounter a series of trenches and MG nests. While my map is based off of this episode, any similarity between actual layouts is pure chance. This map has very few buildings (all single level), but the presence of walls is obvious. There is no way to "get behind the map" or exploit it in any serious way (with maybe the exception of the spawns.) I closed out the entire map with clip brushes, so dont count on exploiting being a problem. Also, the map uses the fullest extent of HINTs, Occluders, fades... so the map will be optimized for big servers. Anyways, the best part about this map is the layout (you can see the overview in SS 9.) Its a circular map and you can get to the center from 3 different paths. All of these paths are good for different classes. This will make gameplay intense (I hope.) Ive been mapping on the BG team since 03 and lead mapper since 04. Ive always though DOD had the best gameplay out of any mod, and BG is very similar in style. I don't have time for large mapping projects or lead possitions because of school, so I thought I'd make a map in my spare time for my farvorite mod :). Anyways my other alias is Pr3dator, but I go by this name now. Back to the topic... please test out the map, let me know if there are any problems. My .res file might be a little "off"... I never had to make one b4 ;). Here are some screenshots and downloads!

Not too sure about the sun. For the time of day and the skybox you're using, the sun is WAYYY too low. The sky is clearly blue, seems like 11AM-1PM for me, the sun should be all the way up. The way it is right now is as if it was a sunset/sunrise, and would require a more orangy-tone skybox.

But other than that, it looks very nice :D

I can not get the mini map to work. Also please don't use Capital letters for resources. Linux thinks its a new folder.

The minimap works on our server - did you go through the dir structure and the res file and change the upper case 'R' to lower case ones - assuming you're on a linux server?

Minimap working now after fixing upper/lowercase problem on a linux server. Cheers.


p.s. We found the Allied spawn area was accessable form the right side by jumping in.

- added more props/details/decals/overviews
- optimizations
- fixed clipping problems (getting stuck on objects)
- decreased spawn time
- increased capture time
- added dustmotes effects
- fixed lighting problems

The .bz2 has some problems and might need to be re-made. Causes crashed at first. You might have to fix typos in the .res file for linux servers aswell.

I am busy with school atm so the next version might be a few weeks. The major difference for the next version will be massive optimization using hints (I will try to leave all the props in), but that will take lots of time to test. My goal is to make the middle area (on top the center small hill) have atleast 10 higher fps. Because of all the player models that can be in that area in large servers, occluders are over worked and FPS drop can be seen.

Changes...

- removed some proprs (for better frames and to "open" the map a little)
- changed and added occluders (for better frames)
- changed and added HINT (for better frames)
- changed trenches under the ground (they look better, better FPS)
- changed wood texture to stop that strange blue glow
- fixed player clip brushes
- fixed minor bugs

If the .res file needs to be fixed. Thanks!

This will probably be the final release of this map. Please test though! Feedback will be great. Next I will have a BG port to dod for you guys. It will also be a uniqu map, but I'll talk about that later.
