[WIP] remake of dod_kraftstoff

Since no one else seemed to be doing it I decided to remake dod_kraftstoff for source a while back. I't might not be the most popular old time dod map but it's one of my absolute favorites and I have really missed playing it in dods.

There is still alot to do before it looks decent and I don't have much spare time to work on it I'm afraid. However I think I might be able to release an early version in a couple of weeks or so. I've stuck as close to the old layout as I have been able to since that was what made it such a great map IMO.

screenies:

I've tried to get in touch with Unreal who as I understand it made the original but his old e-mail doesn't seem to work anymore :(

This looks awsome, and from the photos it looks like u have done a GREAT job on remaking it to the old Kraftsoff!! I can't wait for the release. Keep up the Great work man!!

Your screenshots look true to the layout.. hopefully it works well in source.

Kraftstoff was a very underappreciated map. By all means, it was played... but after the release of source, I never heard it's name again. I do still think about it every now and them because it was a very functional map, but still held it's character.

I hope that's enough motivation to continue work.:D

A real damn good choice to make a remake of!

One of the best paratrooper maps in dod

This was probably my 2nd favorite map in DoD all time. It looks great but it just wont be the same without the FG42. :(

I'm glad to see there are more people who would like to see this map in dods. :D

I really hope I will manage to do it justice. :)

AFAIK Unreal* doesn't map for dod source or any games at all, last time I talked to him he was concentrating on music school.

Besides Valve actually owns Kraftstoff now since they brought if off him.

Looks good so far, but maybe stick with a lighter lighting, maybe an early morning or early evening.

Indeed.

Maybe you could post in the models forum and see if someone will make a fuel truck for you. It was a fuel truck that was one of the objectives wasnt it? I havent played the old DoD in so long its hard to remember. It was a fuel truck and fuel barrels right?

I guess Unreal isn't working on his own version of kraftstoff then. It was basically that I wanted to check with him, and also to just let him know I'm remaking it.

As for the lighting, I know it looks a bit dark. I don't really get that feeling when I'm running around in it though, might just be that I'm used to it. It is supposed to resemble early morning/evening actually. Anyway, I'm probably gonna keep the lighting the way it is until I get it tested , and then see what people have to say. I'm personally quite satisfied with the lighting, so don't really wanna change it. :)

Thanks for the suggestion, I have acctually thought about it. What I got right now is an ordinary truck with some fuel barrels in it, not really the same thing :/ I might wait until the second release or so though, don't know much about modeling and how much work it would be for a modeller, so I wouldn't wanna make someone go through all the trubble of making a fueltruck for a map that noone will play. :(

Lookin' good man. I think the church tower should be blown up a little more but other than that keep it up. :)

SunLits LOVED Kraftstoff. It ran on both public servers and was in the map line up for our custom map DOD league. You have over a 1000 fans just in our community who would be happy to see your version.

I'm afraid I can't do much about the FG-42 :( wish I could though ;)

I agree that the church tower should be blown up a bit more, actually I'm not satisfied with the church all together. But it's gonna have to do for the first release, there are several buildings you can't see in the screenies that are in alot more need of a face lift before release.

I'm glad to hear it was a popular map on some servers at least, I allways had a problem finding a server playing it.
That's one of the many advantages of making a remake instead of starting your own map from scratch :)

For those wondering about a FG42, Sproily is trying to get someone to convert his FG42 model to DoD:S

Cool that your remaking it. I suggest rethinking the axis exits considering how easy it was for allies to move up and pin them in their spawn very very easily.

Nubbits
09-22-2006, 12:59 AM
Hmm, I know alot of people dissliked the axis spawn exit. I personally never really saw why. I've been thinking a bit about how to improve it but the best I've come up with this far is to move up the exits a bit.

The smoke grenades might make it work better in source too.

However I don't think I'll change it for the first release, I wanna stay as close to the original for the first release at least, and then see if there are any required changes.

NOOOO Please keep it just how it was!!! It just gives the allies a few seconds to get setup and defend, I usually play as axis and I know what I'm talking about!!!!

Make the fuel truck! Then, not only would it complete Kraftstoff, but it could also be used in the Source version of dod_hameau.

looks good. though, i am not a big fan of the dark night setting, i liked kraftstoff in the bright daylight or morning atleats, i cant remember what time of day the map was but i remember it was bright.

so would the model play off an existing weapon in dod source?? (fg42) I don't see how u can play the FG42 with sniper.... would be sweet!!

Hehe, well I'm trying to keep it as close to the original as possible. The reason I considered remaking the axis spawn exits is that there was alot of complaining about them all the time when you were playing dod_kraftstoff. But I think the risk that I would change them is minimal, only if they would work worse in source which I seriously doubt.

Well, I'm not a modeler. Wish I could do my own models, but even if I learned how to I barely have the time to map as it is, so I would defenetly not have the time to both map and make models :(

But if some modeler out there feel the urge to make a fueltank it would make me very happy ;) The other objective could use a model for the camo thingie too, atm I only have a crappy brushbased model with an ivy texture as camo :/

It is the twilight feeling I'm going for, not sure I succeded in that, but we'll just have to wait and see what you people think :) If it's to dark, I'll change it for the second release. If I haven't already changed it for the first release, that depends on what the playtesters will say about it.

Could you use the original fuel truck model? I guess it would look pretty crappy?

Frittz made a truck and trailer model that may work ... don't know if he has gone final with it yet.

Also, nubbits, check out the DoD-Federation...we can help with testing the map in a supportive environment of fellow mappers. We also offer webspace/file hosting for your projects.

Here's the trailer -- maybe if you ask Frittz nicely, he could modify it to look like a flatbed (or just put a brush over the top) and then put some barrels on it.....

Thank you! :) ok, I'll notify you when the first public release is out. I'll post in the releases section too so that everyone will know.

Well, I did think about using the old model, then I checked it out and decided that would probably just look weird :)

Frittzes models looks great, however I think they're a bit too big. Not sure but the trailer looks kinda long, and for now I've used the official truck. Here's a couple of pics of the objectives:

They look pretty crappy right now IMO, and will hopefully both be changed before the final release.

I am acctually waiting to get the map tested at the dod-federation, but thanks anyway for telling me Dradz :)

nubbits you should contact CAL-bennet for use of this map in the 5v5 detonation league. Kraftstoff had an awesome layout and would be a perfect fit for CAL, imo. It would bring a lot of publicity to your map as well... traditionally the custom maps used in CAL are some of the most played

The objectives look great even though not exactly like the original. Maybe you could use a few more stacked up barrels, just so it doesnt look like something you could bump over.

krafstoff is the map i miss most other than caen.
