[REL] dod_flash_tank

this basicly is a (fun) showcase map to hopefully give some mappers ideas to make other styles of gameplay maps
download (http://www.dod-federation.com/file.php?id=671)
*edit* changed the download link to dod-federation.com since my ftp is going down :)
objectives are quite easy
axis need to get the tank to the other side of the map
the tank will move as long as an axis is running next to it
it will stop for every sandbag (6 in total) that is in it's way
so blow up the sandbags
(1 satchel charge needed)
the tank will destroy the last barrier, take the flag to win the round
allies need to defend the only flag by slowing down/stopping the tank
do this by standing close to the tank and defending your sandbags
min round time = 5min 40
max round time = 7min
why flash?
I'm not capable of putting the time in making my own map for this and i didn't want to make an "orange_arena" style map
taking the sdk_flash version was a cheap way of doing and i am kinda sorry for it :)
why a moving tank?
2 updates ago they added the "hidden" voice_tank cmd
last update they added the voice_movewithtank cmd
since i used to play some ET (Enemy Territory) i just wondered if i was able to make it in DoD:s with the current sdk ^^
i also made an empty map with a tiger tank wich was able to move forward and backward depending on wich team was "controlling" the tank
and the first team to get the tank past the enemy's spawn won
it was fun but i doubt it would be good to do it in flash so i didn't :)
you could also make it really like in ET (1 team can destroy the tank the other can "repair" it) it just needs some func_breakable triggering the movement of the tank and a "bomb plant" that acts as repairing
haven't tested this map with more then 6 players so there might be some balance issues

These ideas are just what DOD:S requires. We have it on our cycle and tonight everyone agreed this map 'ROCKS'...Thanks inKit!

Yup played it on Snail's server tonight and enjoyed it, I think some ppl struggled to work out what they were supposed to be doing but its a short learning curve - Nice work

Great concept. Fun to play.
Can you lengthen the time limit to say 15 minutes firm or take it out all together?
A 5+- min timer makes way too much of a race instead of being able to execute some strategy. On a full server all the Allies have to do is dig in with mg's in 1 or 2 spots and it'll be nearly impossible for the axis to win.
Thanks,

cool ill check it out for sure
Just make sure not to stand in front of the vehicle as it approaches a sandbag. I was stuck inside of the sandbag.

Cool Idea !!!
Too bad it was implemented in this map and not in a cool original map.

I love the concept and the map. I agree the timelimit needs lenghthened. The only real problems I have had are getting stuck on the tank. I've been stuck on a wheel. under the tank, and pused into a sandbag by the tank while setting an explosive.

This is an ingenious idea. I think my next map will be in this style :O

Nice map, good to see some new ideas coming into the gameplay and I'm sure it's given a few mappers ideas. Anyone wanting to play the map on a UK server just now will find it on constant rotation at the MrDoDS clan server 82.138.242.217:27036

its the original flash with a tank you have to escort.
thats not too hard to imagine :p
the only thing that bugs me is that the tires dont rotate while the tank is moving. its prolly hard or impossible to change that but it would be awesome.

THIS IS CUSTOM MAPPING AT IT"S FINEST!!! Implement a concept, and equally if not more importantly, understand scaling your problems and workload.
For this map to be fun, did it need a new completely new layout, completely new textures, completely new tank model? NO. Implement the gameplay concept, when you determine its successful, then go off and focus on things like a specific map layout. Dont spend months and months working on something unproven.
Fantastic job on this. Unfortunately I have had ZERO free time lately so I havent had the chance to give it a full run, and ontop of that, I just played it on a server that had fade to black, extra grenades for everyone, and who knows what other crap running. But the idea is definitely solid and works.
GREAT job Ink

This is a great ideal for DOD:S, talk about team work this map /concept needs the team work. I can not wait to see what some one comes up with for this concept. Thanks for map and new game play.

This maps is top notch in terms of gameplay, but I was so pissed when I got stuck between the sandback and tank when I was planting. I was so scared seeing that fuse go down. I started to wish I would get shot so I wouldnt have to be bown to bits :(

if u ride the tank, and it reaches a sandbag, u get stuck on it, no matter where u r on the tank/

1 question, are there at least 32 spawn points?

Good job man you beat me to it. I tried to make something like this before the detenation and it turned out pretty aweful i must say. You should really try and make your own map to run this idea.

ROFL, same thing happened to me, but i just pulled out my shovel and started swinging at the corner and luckily i hit an allie coming to diffuse the bomb and i slowed him down enough to where the bomb went off and killed both of us.:D

Great gameplay concept and idea! Played it a little tonight and like it. Hope to play again soon.
On a side note, should you the mapper provide the .res file in the zip package, or should the server admins make the .res file for the custom stuff you provided. The server I played on didn't auto download the mini-map and such, which means they didn't have or make a .res file. I did get this stuff from the file posted at the begining.

I played it and it was kinda fun - fast a furious. There is some stickiness on or around the tank that needs to be addressed. At one point the tank was pushed past the flag and the Axis didn't get the score. Can the tank be pushed back by the Allies? That would be cool.

its not that easy. I tried to make this same kind of thing but i couldnt get the bazooka trigger to stop it if it was hit by a bazooka. Ill try again because i still have my tank test facility map on my hd.

ok..no problem! u must delete the path 222_a and set a clear path! then u copy from the flash_tank the inserts from 222_a and paste it in youre 222_a path! rename your path to 222_a. then u see, all is work fine^^
hope this helps you!

Too much errors. As axis I cannot even reach the first detonation point. Canīt go there. Wrong waypoints or whatever. I can walk through the tank. Please fix.
I was running it on "Die Heckenpenner"

Okok, I disconnected and connected again and it worked. Another mate also told me, he could go through the tank, first time. This map is one of the best custom maps now for me. Why didnīt Valve have such a genius idea?
Would it be possible, to do that game type in dod_argentan?
But there was accouring another error - just one time. See the screenshot. The axis had done all and captured the flag, but thje round dinīt end and the allies won. Why?

1 thing.
I run that good map on a server with stats and points. SO, itīs kinda unfair, because the first 2 sandbags will always be detonated in the first few seconds. YOu cannot reach those ponts so fast, to avoid that. So on axis side, you just get much more points.

Hmm.. On the topic of custom gametypes. If I wanted to make a steal-the-documents gametype how would I do this. I could have a physbox that when it is taken to the allied spawn the allies win. Exept you would have to "kick" the documents around and that could get really annoying. Any ideas?

:D wow nice job man, this is exactly what most people was waiting for, a escort/destroy gametype for dod ala enemyterritory. I think this gamemode still need more work but it's a very good beginning, my congratulations to Inkit. And now seeing what a talented person can do in his spare time, I wonder..... it is so dificult for valve do things like this? I dont know the reason why but i feel valve dont want to develop and improve dods, seems like they are focusing on other projects more important. It's a pity, dods could have been the best ww2 online fps, and now it's simply one more.

woah thanks for all the positive comments guys :)
i was kinda afraid ppl wouldnt really give this a shot
like i said in the donner_tank thread i'd love to fix some things ppl brought up
(and to try some other play styles i have in mind)
but i don't have the time (atm)
i'm really glad some ppl took this map as an inspiration to make other tank/gameplay maps since that was the main reason why i did this
gl&hf with it and i'm always available for any questions
oh and for the record my nick is inK.
(but you can't have a . in your nick on this board :p)
inK.it is more my motto than my nick :)

This thread deserves a bump for relevance. It looks like Valve enjoyed this map idea a lot:
TF2 update: you may’ve heard that new achievements, maps, and unlockable items are on the way. The first map, Goldrush, introduces a new game mode. The BLU team must escort a high-tech mining cart through a series of checkpoints to the RED base within a time limit. The more BLU players near the cart, the faster the cart moves. The cart stops if any RED team member is in the vicinity. We’re balancing the map now; look for it within the month.
I know it's not exactly the same, but dod_flash_tank was the first thing that came to mind.

Ya, great work again inKit. !
This was THE inspiration for my level dod_V2 (http://dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?t=73983).
I'm really looking forward to the TF2 version of your system!!
