If you could make scratches on the medal similar to the scratches on the wood, that would be awesome.

The metal kinda looks like a plastic toy texture. And may I suggest using one of the stocks pictured here:

lols omg. Dont make me reskin the stg to lol. Looks good but needs alot of work. First of all the highlightes are over all nice and the lighting is good to. But the texure im just not fealing. Needs to be darker and have more contrast. More detail to. O im going to start on the mp40 complete reskin then Ill do a k98 reskin and then finaly Ill do maybe a m1 garand or a thompson. I know im going to do a knife and spade skin.

Here is a quick update for the reskin. I made a brand new stock from scratch and made a new grip. I can always change the colors to them so give me some feedback. Also does anyone know how to remove the hands and sleeves when viewing a model in the source sdk model viewer v2.0?

I don't particularly like orange wood (on any StG '44 skin). I'd personally recommend that you do at least two wood/bakelite colours, so people can choose which they prefer. As already shown in this picture (http://img365.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mp442wv.jpg), there's five other varieties you can choose from to skin. That said however, the wood skin itself is quite well done.

It looks like you're using this as a reference:
http://www.deactivated-guns.co.uk/detail/oldspecmp44.htm
Personally, I'd use one of the other darker ones...or you could make two versions so people could choose as S@bre said.
I actually think DoD team used that picture as what to base the default on, because they look very similar.
NJ on it so far though.:)
EDIT:
Looking back through through the pictures, I really like this one:

I like that too, its a neat compromise between the light wood and dark wood/bakelite.
Up for doing three versions Shifty?

i don't mind at all the only problem is trying to fit all the reskins in one file download. Hopefully I can do it for fpsbanana, but dodcustoms no way not 1.3mb to small.

i think you are quite wrong in the ways he could improve his skin.
first, the darkness of the texture has nothing to do with the texture, same with contrast. second, his wood texture is very nice just the highlights arent how id do them, and the metal could use a lot more texture.
but, i like this skin and i think this will turn out nice.
also, try not to talk about your skins in someone elses skin thread.

They are looking good! I particularly like the light variants on both (mainly because I can't see any detail on the dark ones). Got a request: can you see if you can do some alpha mapping to it, like Coyote has on his skins?
5hifty
07-29-2006, 03:50 AM
by alpha do u mean normal maps?
Sabre
07-29-2006, 06:53 AM
No, alpha mapping is different to normal mapping, it helps to convey an effect of reflecting light. It's present on a number of Wile E Coyote's skins, he seems to have harnessed its abilities well, and uses them in place of normal maps.
It uses the "$envmap" and "$basealphaenvmapmask" VMT strings, along with various other lines that define how potent it is. The default C-96 and MG-42 utilise a form of alpha mapping as opposed to normal mapping.
Check out some or Coyote's releases (http://www.sheer-genius.org/wiledod.html) to get some examples. Most of his weapon releases use alpha mapping.
Both normal and alpha mapping works on a skin well, although I don't think that they work together brilliantly, its more one or the other. If you could try for either a normal or alpha map, that would be great.

Here is my final wood reskin version. I will be finalizing the skins and testing them ingame for there replay values. I also have some ingame screenshots of the orange stocked reskin. You can see in the screenshots the alpha maps.

Can't see much of the alpha map in that picture (alpha maps are most noticable in areas with bad lighting), but what I can see I like. I look forward to the release!

These are some awesome skins you've made Shifty (BAR and StG44). Any chance, if you get time, to do the machine guns? Been dying for a good total reskin of them, they seem to get ignored.
