Just to get started - this is just an idea, not anything that I'm positive can be done.
A while back I started looking into modding for the Source engine, and one of the first things I wanted to know whether was possible or not was day/night time cycles.
Now of course given the Source engine doesn't use dynamic lighting, this really isn't feasable, but I still came across some interesting information nevertheless. Talking on the VERC forums, it seemed to be widely accepted that theoretically you could pack up to 4 times of day into one map...had something to do with the fact that each something or rather could have up to 4 lightmaps or something.
Just posting to see if anyone had heard of this? It was said that the transition would be very laggy, so the proper technique would be to restart the map with the new time chosen. Would be pretty cool if people started developing maps in different times of the day.
