[WIP] dod_merville

Hey All,

Been working on a new map based around the British assault of the Merville battery on D-Day. This is my first DOD: Source map, though not my first map. My DOD 1.3 release was a map called dod_pegasus_bridge (http://www.snarkpit.net/maps.php?map=578), a bit too ambitious for the old engine and suffered from performance issues. It's good to see Ginger Lord doing it the justice that battle deserves in the new engine.

This map is still very early on in the construction: the basic bunkers have been made (little interior detail and 2 more need to be built), some trench work, a little terrain and the AA pit. I'm working on getting the key structures and displacements done before going through and raising the detail level a number of notches. Also many of the finer details (at this point the trench stakes) will be converted into models to help increase performance. Also the discerning historians among you will notice the map is currently set during the day, when the battle actually happened at night (or early morning). As the map gets bigger I will start adding the appropriate lighting, so don't worry about that. I'm going for a decent level of historical accuracy, all the key features will be accurate as well as objectives and the attack positions, but in terms of smaller details like trenches, which have been much harder to find detailed evidence of, I'll be adding them as I see fit (and seem logical).

As I work on it I'll be posting update screenshots to keep you all filled in on the dev process, probably on a weekly basis as this is all happening around my full-time job. Hopefully within a couple of months there will be a finished product fo you all to enjoy. Initial screenshots below:

It's a nice start. If I may say so, please get another host. I don't like having pop ups from looking at your screens (if you want, dod-federation can host your own mapping website and pics)

Thanks for letting me know. I've just switched it back to imageshack, so sorry in advance for any pop-ups.

Hey Smith :D

I got you're mail - I'll be in touch soon. I've got a bunch of intel I can give you about Merville if you want to make it *really* accurate. :)

Looks good so far, when Jed says accurate, he could probably tell you which way the blades of grass were lieing at the time of the assault.

Maybe thats a bit too much, but he certainly has a horrendous amount of intel on stuff :p

Sounds great Jed. Being in Australia always makes it a bit difficult to round up accurate and detailed info, I've pretty much exhausted google image search :).

So bring on the accuracy ensuring intel!

Like Furyo said, we offer free webspace for mapper on dod-federation.com, no publicity, you get your own sub domain name like a ISP except that we need to share FTP connection with up to 10 mapper per connection. But the rest is like having your own website. All we ask is that you follow all US law in place and keep content related to your mapping.

If your are interrested register on our forum at:

http://www.dod-federation.com/forum/

And PM me from there, I will set you up.

I got a good laugh from this statement. :D He must really know his history then.

I like where this map is gonna go and will stay tuned. I like the trench and cement work. When you get to the point of a sky line I hope you use a darker skyline with maybe some fog for a little cover.

This map is no longer being developed for DOD, I'll be starting from scratch and building it as an official map for the excellent Commonwealth Forces modification Ham and Jam (http://www.hamandjam.org).

As such there won't be any more dev screens up here for this map or the new version for HaJ. Any new screenshots of the map will be put up on the Ham and Jam (http://www.hamandjam.org) home page when they get to a sufficient level of completion.

If you haven't heard of the mod or seen any of the content being developed by this dedicated and talented team then check out the link above.

Thanks for your interest,

Agent Smith

Yay, a gigantic minefield where the player has to find the single small path through it, all the while under incredible amounts of MG fire!:p
