Grass from HL2 to DOD

I know this question has been brought up several times, especially by me. I couldnt find it specifically on the web, but after some related issues, I found out how.
We all know that DOD has some nice grass sprites, but they are all basically the same lush and green sprouts. If you want to get some of the grass from the detailsprites file from HL2, its simple. First, do not copy over your details.vbsp file. That is useless, because the DOD version already includes all the necessary stuff for HL2. Go to your Materials>Detail folder under Half-Life 2 and copy the files detailsprites.vmt and detailsprites.vtf over to the replica folder under Day of Defeat Source. Boom. Thats it. Now you have access to all those nice grass sprites from HL2. However, you dont want to include these files with your map download or else it could potentially screw up some other grasses in other maps. So just pack it up into your bsp before release. That should do the trick.
Now its just a matter of creating your own vmt files for a texture to use these detail sprites.
Hope that answered some questions out there!

Hey,

I just got your PM. Glad you figured it out. I never experimented with .vmts, so I couldn't have helped you anyway ! I did however use a custom detail.vbsp to place super low-poly models on my terrain (i'm lazy).

Did you try re-naming the carried over vtf and vmt files?

I noticed in the map properties dialogue box, there is a place to specify which detail.vbsp the map uses. If that worked it would be possible to pack the new vmt and vtf files into the .bsp without affecting other maps, after a map change.

Thanks for the info !

custom, as in you made it yourself or did you get someone else to help you with it? also, if you did make it yourself, did you end up making your own trees (with all the alpha layor crap) into a vtf?

thats cool. i know how to do some of that stuff, but I really never get around to it. I have so much work on the table...

also, im not sure if you can rename the vtf and vmt file names or not. if you do, youd need to bring in a custom vbsp file and such (im guessing). however, in this case since we are just using hl2 related stuff, its not necessary

The detail.vbsp I made just used some of the stock HL2 shrubs. I have however imported a custom tree model into DoD:S w/alpha channels.

Adding alpha channels is quite simple in P.S.
