Workaround for Phong Shading effects?

Is it even possible for those of us who play with older cards from the ATI family (like the 9700-9800 pros)?

It has been mentioned that the technology worked in FarCry on videocards that don't display the effects in DoD:S, so could there be a way to get the effects to work, or is that completely beyond the scope of modification non-devs are capable of?

As I recall, the way we got to make separate skins for each class was through a clever hackjob of the player .vtfs. This is a totally different case, but maybe the phong thing can be corrected.

Or maybe I'm just a wishful thinker.

I'm running an x800 Pro and I can run it just fine with stock models. I had Wile E's models installed during the update and I had shiny gear, but as soon as I took them off it was running just fine. I want my class-specific skins back, though. I think I'm going into Wile E withdrawal.

I should have been clearer, I meant the 9700-9800 pro series of ATI cards, which don't run it.

I've edited my first post for clarity. :)

How about for (:() an old GeForce 4 MX 440?
