I am a newbie map maker who seems to have a pretty good understanding of Hammer. I have read most of the tutorials from here and your list of various other websites. I can complete compile the map and get it to run. The problem is when map is switched to. The selected team screen doesn't appear.You have to use the hot keys to get the screen to come up. I am sure that I am leaving something out. I do have all the important entities in.

Just curious as to what I am doing wrong?

Also I am making the map for DoD Classic not Source if that make a difference.

This sounds like a problem with your game configuration, not the map per say.

Is it happening when you auto-launch the game after compiling your map, or when starting a new server with your map?
