Need help developing face models for DOD

Hey,

I've never really modded before.. mostly I'm just a casual gamer. So I need a some advice to help get through this little project of mine...

Basically I want to add my face and my friend's face to the head models in DOD. I've already read a few of the forum stickies to help me get started on this... but I'm still far from finished.

So far I've modeled our faces using FaceGen and saved the models as .xsi files. I've also downloaded the free XSI Mod Tool which is supposed to help me make the final product...

But now I'm stuck just staring at this XSI Mod Tool.. I took one look at the user interface and almost gave up! I can't even figure out how to open my xsi models from FaceGen!

So here is where I need advice from you guys... My goal is to develop the models so that when my friend and I play the game, we will only see our faces on OUR characters. We don't want to see everyone else in the game running with our ugly mugs too! Just our characters...

Is this possible? Even if it isn't and I have to settle with everyone else looking like my friend, how do I replace the original game faces with my FaceGen models?

Thanks.. I will be around again in the evenings to check in on this post.

Not possible I'm afraid.

First, you can just limit a model to a specific player without something like Manimod running on the server.

Secondly, by default, DoD:S servers run a consistency check to make sure you're using the default player models. Any change other than the skin and the server will disconnect you.

Are you sure? I was in a game once where the admins got to wear different uniforms s and one for the germans. And there was only one person on each team who had these modified uniforms (the admins..)

What about running a dedicated server? Would I be able to set my own rules and player models then?

Is it really impossile to import my friends face into DOD.. even if I have to see it on half a dozen other players who choose "Support"?

Well yea. You can create a custom skin, ie. replace the face with your mates' and set all support Allies to use that model.

It's kind of a hollow solution, but it's the best you're gonna get. Plus. nobody else is gonna see what your are seeing custom-model-wise.

Oh thats fine if no one else can see what we look like! Im just doing this so my friend and I can see each other in the game...

it woul dbe best if only our characters had the face change.. but if we have to set it up so that EVRYONE looks like us.. then so be it.

But to get back to the Original Topic... how do I replace the face models?? I have the XSI mod tool.. do I open up the orignal player models for DOD and replace the faces with my friends face? how do I do this?

(i'll be back tomorrow evening again)

Well as I dont use XSI I can't help with specifics but I suggest you check out the Valve SDK wiki and search for the XSI tutorials:

Probably the best ones to check are the ones on enveloping as you'll need to delete the stock head, insert, scale and position your new one and then do the vertex weighting. Once all that is done you'll need to export and compile it.

As has been mentioned before, you'll probably only be able to run this locally on a lan game with model consistency checking turned off though.

Boo.. this is dissapointing. I thought Valve supported modding.. why wouldn't they let us texture our own players and play with them on the official game servers? As long as the new models were within certain size restrictions (like you ddint make yourself a twig) then it sounds fair to me.

I will check out that tutorial Jed, thanks..

You can have a skin but not a model of your buddy in dods. Ya I was disapointed when I found out no custom models. If valve makes the airborne models for dods I realy dont care but they should make them top notch with all the equipment and all the jump gear and helmet scrim.

^^ I have a feeling they'd rather add the newest razor cell phone to the elite model

oh wait..

Ya they always do all these updates on css but tell you the truth I havnt played css in about 9 months and I dont realy like it its all hackers/cheaters,Realy good people, and just anoying people. But dods has like and obj of the game. All the skinners and modelers work for css. I like dods and dont like css. There probably going to make some new stupid stuff for css instead of making a couple of simple airborne models. I might be typing bad becasue im very tired. They made 6 new models for css instead of updated dods just with some simple things.

cheers dod123
