[WIP] dod_solitude

Here are a few new SS. Work has been slow on the map I was going to just port it over but easier said then done lol So I decided to remake it from scratch except the basic layout is still identical. I should have a beta ready in a week or so, You will notice a few changes but nothing that should effect the game play of the map all flags will be the same ,The lighting you see will be much brighter, also these screens shots was just for testing some different light capabilities. Well back to work now ;) cya soon... And A big thanks to Insta for giving me permission to remake this map

Thats excellent news, Solitude/Advance is one of my all time favourite maps, period:)

From what i can make out in the screenies it looks very nice, can't wait!

Crank up the ambient lighting and it will look even better.

Hi Ripster,

Thanks for remaking dod_solitude for source, another big time favourite custom map.

I'm hoping you will keep the same lighting as the old DOD 1.3 version. Old guy like me just can't see and that is no fun.

From what you have shown it looks nice but the lighting needs to be tweaked and maybe a bit more detail in the brushwork

The lighting you see will be much brighter, also these screens shots was just for testing some different light capabilities.

I could be (as usual) completely off, but isn't this the original work of Ginger Lord?

I know John doesn't map for dod source anymore, but just out of curiosity (and if it's him), maybe you want to check with him (or whoever the original mapper is) that it's ok to port it and/or use the name

Always felt solitude was a vastly underated map, so given that no one has ported harrington yet, I was surprised to see someone do solitude

It was a great map in 1.3 and from the screenies it looks like really good map is coming out of it.

Looking forward to getting this on our servers, keep it up...

11 New screen shots. Its getting very close, I had to work out a few bugs, And the brush work is very intricate for me anyway this took awhile. I have a lot of detail left to do but it should go quick now that the hard part is over ;) I also had the weirdest error VERTEX_BUFFER_OVERUN ? but Ive seem to have worked it out after optimizing the map some. Should be ready by next weekend

Nice work, you can clearly see the layout of solitude and the light and ambience is looking good.

A small request tho regarding texturing...

Please dont use the timber/plaster texture quite so much. The last screenshot probably shows what I mean. Where you do use it, architecturally windows would go between the beams not across them.

Also I'm not sure what material you envisage making the roof edge on picture 2, but it looks kinda strange (can also see this on picture 5, in fact the whole building there looks a little off, the post supporting it is going at an angle through the edge of the stairs and it would probably look better if you put a beam across between the posts to give it a visible support.

I'm not having a go at you, I am really looking forward to playing solitude in source just little things like that catch my eye when they look wrong (I'd be looking at it every time I was capping that flag and probably get shot as a result and as fuzzdad always says, ppl hate it when they get killed by the map) ;)

All in all though, its looking good, keep it up.

It will be all cleaned up before the release I just got all the basic brush work finished Ill start the detailed texturing next . As for the wood plaster it will be correct good eye though :) and thanks for the input it's always welcome here !! good or bad

Here are a few new Screen Shots, it's getting close got to finish optimizing it and do some beta testing. There are a few little changes but the map it basically the same as the 1.3 version as far as the layout goes. release will probably be in a week. Before releasing any beta, please realign your textures!!!!!!

The general atmosphere and architecture of the map are very nice, but the weirdly aligned textures leaves some areas of the map to be desired, like in the 4th screenshot. That house in the middle could use 2 different texture son the facade, as it just looks weird that theres a trim across the upper half, also, the same trim just doesn't fit on the left wall of the same building. I see that you tried to make a continuation with the parapet/wall, but it doesn't look logical, you should use another texture to break up the monotomy and the weird trim placement. Same trim also gets cut by the windows, it just doesn't look that good.
The white plaster building in the 6th screenshot is also weirdly textured, not a fan of the whole plaster look. You should do something more along the lines of the building in the first screenshot with the brick pillars and upper plaster, which looks way nicer and applied.
Like I said, it's just a matter of fine tuning some things to let this jewel shine :D

Have to say I agree, the map on the whole looks fantastic but my eye keeps getting drawn to the slightly strange detailing here and there, roof edges/ridges, wall copings etc.

But you're in good hands with Luke, looking forward to playing this, always one of the great underrated 1.3 maps I thought.

It appears on this screenshot (http://nolimitclan.com/dod_solitude_b30010.jpg) the roof to the left, with the shinlings on it, the texture on the bottom part is sideways... but thats on all the roof's?
