Is it possible to put a more detailed intro-screen to a map?
Hi,
first apologies if this has been already askedin the forums, but since all the maps donīt have exactly what I want I ask it directly here.
First, what do we see when a map is loaded. A brief description of what the objectives of the map are. The allies... and the axis....
On the background you can see the map (beach, forest, city-village and so on depending on the actual map).
Here comes the question. Is it possible (additional to the default intro) to do the following? Can you also add a screen with pictures (pics, like the real city, a map, other pics, some test) it would be like a screen saver but with more details on the objectives, or history of the battle, or the city, or a legend. For any of those out there who know the comics Corto Maltese from Hugo Prat, when he had to make a comic, he always put an introduction with pictures of the cities, drawings, biographies, ...
In my case I want to know if a similar thing can be introduced in a map to add another sense of realism-hystorical background-whatever you want to call it.
Thanks

DoD 3.1 para maps had very detailed 3D intros ... peeps got board waiting for the game to start.
I would get board waiting for the intro to finish ... I wanna play tha map, not have a history leason.
Anyone else?
i was not intending to put a story just the screen filled with some pics, short text, nothing more, if i am ever to make a map i will put note with you name saying that "do not worry it is only 5 secs of your time"
he-he-he
I don't doubt that you can still implement intro's with some of the entities, but don't quote me on that.
Personally (IMO) the intros were great. But the general population has no taste so unfortunately that means they are the ones catered too.
For even better examples look at CS. Some of the best most outstanding unoffical levels were maybe played on 2 servers. And there are 30000 CS servers. Even then they were usually empty. And this fy_iceworld map I'd heard so many people talking about... well I tried it this weekend. It was a box with 4 pillers in it. And weapons so you didn't even have to think about your purchases. Now that level although unoffical is played widely across the net for reasons I'm not able to comprehend. It lost its touch for me after the 2nd round (rounds last about 25 seconds).
What you can quote me on is that the average gamer is very close minded.
you could make the picture a texture, and have the spectator entity looking at the picture

He's not talking about cutscenes! He means like a splash screen or whatever that has mission information on it.

You can have that combined with a cutscene. Like when you used to start para_glider. You're in a room with all sorts of docs on a board with info. Have the camera swing around the room and show what you like.
I do know what you have in mind and as far as I know, it can't be done in that way. It would have to be done as in previously stated posts.
I'd just go to a cut scene but I'd have a sprite locked to player veiw. the sprite would cover their view and would be the map screen thing.

Why can't we have a nice list of objectives, map, and briefing displayed in the console while the map loads? It will be displayed in a clear point-by-point Operation Flashpoint format, the objectives neatly spelt out (1. do this 2. do this. 3. do this.). There will be other tabs if you are interested in reading some "frills" or "history stuff" (all the important objective and mission info is in the front page and is written very clearly in point format for ANYONE to understand).
When the map finishes loading and we r ready to get into the server, we just need to click on "ENTER>>", like in MOHAA singleplayer demo. Thus, we get straight into the action! OH yea, i forgot, for those 'experienced players' that already know the map very well, they can check the box "enter me when map is finished loading" while the map loads.

That is possible. Just edit the dod/yourmap.cfg and add some 'echo' commands.
You can still have the same type of opening intro that para maps had you just need to know which ents to use

i remember a dod team somewhere saying that you can still do opening cut scenes, it's just that due to time constraints none of the official 1.0 maps have them.
Take a look, yes the speach is wrong-timed, but I needed some words.
It will be only a screen, not a video or whatever, including maps, pictures, and so on.
1. Can it be done?
2. How?
3. Thanks

Here is one idea written above by gen.mckee :
Insert your picture in a wad file, place this textures on a brush, a info_player_observer in front of it, 1 or 2 light, keep all the stuff in a room somewhere in the map where the player can't go, compile this and keep blank the briefing txt file of your map.
Or create a cut scene.
i will try the wally way, thanks again

Yeppers..but I didn't use a camera...all I did was place the observer in a itty-bitty room way down at the bottom of the grid...
