High-res v_ skins.

Why do people use these highres skins? At 1280x1024 with 8xAF, there is lots of oversampling, which looks horrid and clashes with the world graphics.

Maybe it's because of my 8xAF? But I rather have slightly blurry weapons than blurry world graphics.

I resize those huge player skins to 512*512 because from the average distance you see more detail/dirt and grime. I find on huge resolutions the dirt and grime features don't come out so well.

It's a thing from the beta days, i have a fetish for seeing a <3<3<3<3<3ty low res texture on players only.

Well, first 1st person armskins look much better!
And my hires sandbags texture looks much, much better if you are close to it, then you really see which material its made of, just give it a try and see for yourself.
And yes, some hires textures/skins are less noticable.

It depends on your card setup.

I said this before but I'll just repeat for your benefit ;) I personally believe, in most cases, 1024 x 1024 is good enough for most texture applications out there. The 2 exceptions I make on my OWN computer are:

Player models
Garand and K98 v_models

Reason: these are the only models you will get close enough to to notice the difference - for player models, when wviewing in death-cam or spectator it sometimes gets REAL close up, and you can definitely see the extra detail; For the Garand and K98, in ironsight mode it is right in your face and yes 2048 will make a big visual difference that close up :)

I personally use the default sizes (1024x1024 OR 1024x512) for all my other weapons, because those weapons NEVER, never, never get close enough to your point of view to see the extra detail. I OFFER alternate hi-res weapon skins because that's what people want, but I always have a default size packed in with it ;)

This is %100 percent your video card and/or the settings your have. I can pretty comfortably say most people do not have that problem. I have a 3 year old ATI 9700 pro running 3 year old drivers with AA disabled and even with the hires player models WITH normal maps, I get an average 50 FPS on most maps. Using stock defauts skins I get - ready for it? - an average 50 FPS on maps. As long as you don't get too crazy and add normal maps to everything or 50 hi-res textures, chances are your card can take it.
