map idea - PEGASUS BRIDGE

just had a great idea for a map - to those mappers out there with 'mappers block'.
pegasus bridge on dday was the one where the allies landed some gliders within feet of the bridge and then held it until reinforcements arrived.
although it was the brits you could use americans for now, and the advantage is that this is a very well known operation and there are lots of aerial photo's and reference material for the site as the bridge is still there. alies must move from gliders up to the other side of the bridge - axis counter attack this. could work in day or night.
we need a good bridge map, i played a good custom bridge map recently but i think the bridge was far too long. on pegasus the bridge is a smallish in size with defences at both ends, but also some terrain before the bridge is reached (where the fliders landed).
anyway - if you like the idea then please make the map!! :)

I thought about it many times over the last year but I was too scared to take on such a famous map for recreation, I hope whoever makes this map does it the justice it deserves.

Ludendorff is the only existing bridge map I can think of and a very good one in my opinion - more maps like this are welcome . The real operation to capture Pegasus Bridge on D-Day was a British one but even without them in the game I guess it would still make a good map. Anyone interested in the story of the bridge should read the book "Pegasus Bridge" by Stephen Ambrose - he was the author of Band Of Brothers. :)

Its always been an elusive map, I know Taffeh once started it back in...god knows when beta 2.0 and it never got done.

And not me but my nemesis :p
Funny thing is about 4 years ago both of us were working on an Iranian Embassy Siege Map for CS, was a bit spooky for my liking!

Yeah I remember. The first map model I ever made was the Horsa model for it. :)
and will you do it again for source Trp. Jed ? :)

Bloody better do.
Hi peeps, I did have a stab at doing something based on the pegasus bridge but screwed it badly due to being so crap at mapping. If any mapper is wanting to give it a try, I can pass over the stuff I have for dod_pegasus_b1 to them.
I found that the fps dropped dramatically as the map was out in the open.

Tolk

Take it you weren't going for realism as besides the bridge there was nothing like that there :p
I've got no real FPS problems in my version of the map and the playable area is huge and open, from the bridge upto the junction between Benouville and Le Port. I forget the exact distance but its going to be over 10k units and the visible area is about 6000k units with fog.

I'm not a mapper, but I do participate in the testing with the DOD Federation. Are all the maps with wide open spaces going to reuire the use of fog in order to obtain a playabel FPS. I assume this is not a Source engin limitation, but a computing power limitation. This would of course mean the in a few years as gammers get better computers these open maps will be more possible. Right?
Sorry for getting off track. ;)

Or engine improvements. I belived with EP2 we'll see improvements to the Source engine for open area maps.

Yeah thats what I want to know. After watching the Ep2 trailer, are we going to see more outside/wideopen area maps for DoD?

In truth the wide open maps are really not the problem with performance from a mapping perspective....you can build a all-displacment map with a few nice tree's and a few buildings and get great perf in single player as long as you don't overdo the crazy detail and you limit water w/portals and other tricks to keep the performance hit managable. The problem then lies in gameplay and too many people being seen on-screen at one time. Fog can help, rolling hills and using strategically deployed terrain masses can help.
And remember...all these folks in here wanting wide-open maps can't complain when joe-karman picks them off at 6000 units with a reflex pixel-shot unless they argue:
"The CoF is too small"
"OMG Headshots w/SMG!@!"
"The damage needs to be lowered"

Thanks for the plug Devils Rear :D , and for putting it on your clan server way back when.
That was pretty wacky Agent_S, did you get very far with your version of the Iranian Embassy Siege? I ended up ditching through lack of time and a generally poor layout for cs, though I made the facade of the building and it wasn't looking too bad.
I *think* I used your Horsa model in my version of pegasus as well Jed. I think a new version is definately in order, once you've made me my Skoda cannon ;) .
Took me over a year to create my version of pegasus, though that was in between uni. I was pretty happy with it, though its r_speeds were somewhat higher than advised.
[Edit] Remebered I had some compiled picks up on deviant art :

Your version is blitzing it Ginger, I can't wait to be able to play it once HaJ is released, its gonna be a real cracker to say the least  .
